Before Wednesday’s game against the Diamondbacks, the Mets placed left-handed relief pitcher Danny Young on the 15-Day Injured List with a left elbow strain. This morning, news broke that Young will require Tommy John Surgery, and was moved to the 60-Day IL.
Young appeared in ten games for the 2025 Mets, with an ERA of 4.32. Young had two poor outings – the fourth game of the season agains the Marlins and April 20th’s appearance against the Cardinals – but overall, he has been an effective reliever this season. In his final appearance for the season, he struck out three Nationals in an inning of work on April 26.
This news comes less than a week after lefty A.J. Minter went on the IL for a lat injury that Carlos Mendoza categorized as ‘pretty significant,’ and one that is expected to keep Minter out until late in the year or, potentially, until next season.
This combination of moves means that the Mets are without the two lefties that they planned to have as part of their big league bullpen. The only left-hander currently in the Mets’ relief corps is Génesis Cabrera, who joined the team on Thursday.
The Mets also have Brooks Raley in the hopper. Raley, who is coming off his own Tommy John Surgery, is throwing bullpen sessions, hopefully ahead of a mid-summer debut for the Mets. He was re-signed last week with a club option for 2026.
