The Cricket West Indies has announced a 25% reduction in retainer fees for men’s players as part of a comprehensive financial restructuring plan. The reduction will take effect from October 2026 and run through September 2027. Men’s players on central contracts will see their retainer fees cut by a quarter, while the structure of domestic player contracts has also changed. Domestic players have been moved to retainer contracts lasting seven months, running from October 2026 to April 2027, instead of the full 12 months previously offered.
The decision comes as CWI faces severe financial strain. The board recorded a net loss of US$28 million for the financial year ending September 2025 and is projecting a US$26 million loss for the 2026 financial cycle. In July, CWI received an emergency loan of US$12.82 million from the International Cricket Council to help manage its financial difficulties. According to Cricinfo, CWI CEO Chris Dehring described the restructuring as a response to mounting pressures across multiple fronts.
“We appreciate the spirit of cooperation of the West Indies Players’ Association and the players who have demonstrated their understanding of the circumstances we all face. While not ideal, it is a necessary step towards financial stability,” CWI chief executive Chris Dehring said as quoted by Cricinfo.

Why has CWI suspended domestic tournaments?
Alongside the pay reduction, CWI has suspended the men’s Super50 tournament and women’s T20 Blaze competition this year. The men’s Super50 was scheduled to begin in November, while the women’s competitions were planned for the upcoming season. CWI cited operational costs as the primary reason for these suspensions.
“Our domestic tournaments as structured historically, where Cricket West Indies bears the entire cost of every national team and tournament, whether it is age-group, development or senior for both men and women, including salaries, match fees, airfares, hotels and event staging costs, are simply unsustainable. The high cost of domestic travel and accommodation absorbs too much of our scarce resources every year instead of being deployed for the direct benefit of our cricket,” said Dehring.
How will West Indies prepare for the 2027 World Cup qualifier?
The suspension of the Super50 tournament removes a crucial pathway for players developing towards West Indies ODI selection. West Indies missed qualification for the 2023 ODI World Cup and are scheduled to compete in a World Cup qualifier in February-March 2027 for the next edition. To prepare for this qualifier, CWI has announced plans to arrange white-ball matches against a visiting England A team in November, followed by an ODI team camp.
CWI has introduced alternative qualification pathways for upcoming international events. The board announced qualification tournaments for men’s and women’s teams aiming to compete at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The costs for these tournaments will be borne by the cricket boards of individual nations rather than CWI.
The restructuring reflects the unique challenges facing West Indies cricket as a composite team of independent nation-states. Individual nations are set to send teams to the Pan American Games in Lima next year and to the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 2028. The top-four finishers from the 2025-26 Super50 tournament had been announced as qualifiers for the men’s event at the Pan American Games, though that competition will be a T20 format rather than 50-overs. Similarly, the top-four finishers from the 2025-26 T20 Blaze were to qualify for the women’s event at the Pan American Games.
“These replacement tournaments will be by invitation to the 10 countries under the aegis of Cricket West Indies that qualify for Olympic participation. We are excited by these new invitational tournaments, the dates for which are being finalized, as given the higher stakes and prestige, it’s an opportunity for individual countries to galvanize national resources to chase Olympic glory, with the responsibility and cost of participation falling on their respective national cricket & Olympic associations, private sectors, governments and people, hopefully fulfilling a desire to make a meaningfully contribution to their national team’s hunt for Olympic Glory,” said Dehring.
