Chennai Super Kings have reportedly joined the race to sign Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya ahead of IPL 2027, setting up what could become one of the biggest trade stories in IPL history. The Yellow Army’s sudden interest in the star all-rounder comes after the blockbuster swap involving Rishabh Pant and Kuldeep Yadav between Delhi Capitals and Lucknow Super Giants just weeks earlier, signalling an aggressive trade window ahead of the next season.

The IPL trade market has exploded with activity since the season ended in May. Lucknow Super Giants and Delhi Capitals have completed a major player swap involving Rishabh Pant and Kuldeep Yadav, a deal that could significantly impact the balance of power in the tournament. Pant accepted a revised salary of INR 15 crore, significantly lower than the INR 27 crore contract he received after becoming the most expensive player in IPL history at the 2025 mega auction. In return, Lucknow acquired Kuldeep Yadav for his existing contract value of INR 13.50 crore. Now, CSK’s entry into the Pandya bidding war has intensified speculation about the franchise’s plans to rebuild.

CSK faces competition from multiple franchises for Pandya

According to reports, CSK have entered discussions after Kolkata Knight Riders had already emerged as serious contenders for the India all-rounder, with CSK now joining KKR in the race to sign Hardik Pandya for IPL 2027. The race for the star all-rounder is far from a two-horse affair, however. Seven IPL franchises have shown interest in Hardik, with only Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Sunrisers Hyderabad reportedly not having approached Mumbai Indians.

CSK finished the 2026 season in eighth place with six wins from 14 matches, prompting urgent roster changes. The franchise views Pandya as a potential cornerstone signing to reshape their squad for the post-MS Dhoni era.

Despite growing speculation, no concrete agreement has been reached between any franchise and Mumbai Indians for Pandya’s services. Both sides are negotiating terms, but timelines remain unclear. CSK will need to act decisively if they are serious about landing one of India’s biggest T20 stars in what promises to be a landmark transfer window.
