Cricket Australia officially approved private investment in the Big Bash League and the Women’s Big Bash League on Tuesday, September 8, marking a significant structural shift in how the domestic T20 competitions will be owned and funded going forward.
Melbourne Renegades have been identified as the first club to enter a formal sales process, with CA inviting bids for a 100 per cent stake in the franchise. Cricket Victoria had earlier sold its stake in the club, opening it up to a private takeover. New ownership is expected to assume control from the 2027-28 BBL and WBBL seasons. Throughout the 2026-27 season, CA will manage the Renegades in a caretaker capacity, and the club’s participation in both competitions will continue without disruption.
“Cricket Australia and its State members are united in our commitment to investing in and growing the BBL and WBBL, and to advancing the interests of cricket at every level. By opening the door to private investment in the Big Bash Leagues, Cricket Australia is taking a deliberate step to strengthen and secure the long-term future of the game,” CA chairman Mike Baird said, as quoted by Cricbuzz.
Why has Cricket Australia decided to allow private investment?
CA described the decision as the result of extensive analysis and consultation conducted over several months, involving the governing body and its state members. The framework is built around a self-determination model, under which each state member can choose the most appropriate pathway for its own club and community.
“Beginning the sales process for the Renegades allows us to take the first step in a self-determination model for our members and represents a defining moment for the game. This is a significant decision that has involved an enormous amount of analysis, discussion and collaboration over many months. I’d like to thank all involved as we move to what we believe is the best way to secure cricket’s future in this country, strengthen the Big Bash and protect our standing on the global stage,” Baird said.
Which clubs may follow and what oversight will Cricket Australia retain?
Private investment is not expected to arrive at every BBL club simultaneously. Hobart Hurricanes, Melbourne Stars and Perth Scorchers have been reported as interested in attracting private investors. Sydney Sixers, Sydney Thunder, Brisbane Heat and Adelaide Strikers are not currently pursuing that route, meaning the competition will run with a combination of privately owned and state-body-operated clubs for the foreseeable future. CA, however, confirmed it will retain authority over several key areas regardless of individual club ownership.
“Importantly, CA and its members will maintain control over the most significant aspects of Australian Cricket operations, including international scheduling, player availability, the Big Bash Leagues salary caps, branding proposals as well as the reserve price for a licence to operate that must be achieved, and approval of investors,” Baird added.
Any prospective buyer of the Melbourne Renegades licence, and any future club licence, will require formal approval from Cricket Australia before a transaction can be completed. The reserve price for the Renegades licence has not been publicly disclosed, and no timeline beyond the 2027-28 season target has been confirmed for the conclusion of the sales process.
