Cook labels lack of centuries from England a ‘concern’

Sir Alastair Cook has described England‘s failure to score centuries this summer as a concern, speaking after Day 2 of the third Test between England and Pakistan at Edgbaston, Birmingham

England batters have managed 22 50-plus scores throughout the summer, but Ben Duckett‘s 113 against New Zealand at Trent Bridge remains the only hundred scored across six Tests. As exemplified in Edgbaston, despite posting 453 runs in their first innings in the third Test at Edgbaston, four England batters, Harry Brook, Jamie Smith, Dan Lawrence and Emilio Gay, failed to convert their fifties into centuries. Cook pointed to conditions and the ball staying hard throughout 80 overs as contributing factors, also labelling it as something that has caught up with the entire team.

“I think it’s a whole thing in the team at the minute, the lack of hundreds and whether that’s down to the conditions they’re facing and the fact that the ball is staying hard throughout the 80 overs, the majority of the time. I think it’s just a little thing in that dressing room when you get into 50s because it’s like a habit to all of them, so it gets broken by two people scoring hundreds and everyone relaxes, but the minute until someone does it, it is a concern,” Cook said, speaking on BBC Test Match Special.

Why does Cook believe the habit of scoring hundreds matters so much?

Cook’s concern goes beyond the numbers themselves. He suggested that the inability to convert fifties into hundreds creates a psychological pattern inside the dressing room, where the habit of falling short becomes self-reinforcing until someone breaks it with a big score.

The former England captain noted that centuries carry particular weight when it comes to selection certainty. Players who reach three figures, in his view, effectively guarantee their place in the squad, while those who consistently fall short of that mark remain vulnerable regardless of their other contributions.

Which England players does Cook believe need big hundreds to secure their places?

Cook specifically identified Lawrence and Jordan Cox as players who are on the verge of cementing their positions in the England setup. Cox has recorded two half-centuries against Pakistan, while Lawrence’s 65 at Edgbaston was his third half-century of the series. Cook noted Lawrence’s visible frustration upon dismissal in the third Test, reading it as a sign that the batter himself understood the opportunity he had let slip.

“You saw the frustration for him [Lawrence], a big shout of no when he got out because he just knew there’s an opportunity, so if you’ve got hundreds, you know you’re on the plane [to South Africa]. I still think he will be, but if you guaranteed hundreds, you guaranteed selection. I just think a lot of those players are just people like Cox and him who are on the verge of cementing your place. You only really cement it with big, big hundreds and so he’ll [Lawrence] go to bed tonight, yes, he’s happy to contribute, you’ve always got to say the right things, but as a batter, you’re judged really on hundreds,” Cook said.
