Controversy erupts after Digvesh Singh's catch signalled out without proper TV replay, fans express disappointment

Finn Allen was caught by Digvesh Singh Rathi in Match 15 of IPL 2026 between Kolkata Knight Riders and Lucknow Super Giants at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata, off a Prince Yadav delivery in the second over of the game. Digvesh was stationed at the deep third man and completed a sharp catch, inches away from the boundary ropes.

The catch was adjudged as clean by the umpires, and as a result, Allen had to make the long walk back after scoring nine off eight. However, the real drama started after there was a television replay of the dismissal, which indicated that there might be a possibility that Digvesh’s left foot might have touched one of the boundary cushions, as the matter looked very close upon seeing it from multiple angles and in slow motion.

It is worth mentioning that nowadays, the level of umpiring in the IPL has scaled very high with the usage of technology. Quick boundary checks and referrals by the third umpire just a few seconds after the actual incident have allowed for making faster decisions, saving a lot of time to ensure that the match ends within the allotted time and there is the least time consumed for television replays.

Nonetheless, the damage was done, as Allen‘s dismissal resulted in the fall of the first wicket for KKR pretty early on in the innings.

A set of fans, however, continued debating the fairness of the catch on social media. Many fans took to their social media handles on ‘X’ (formerly known as Twitter) to opine their views, questioning if there was any need to make a hasteful decision by KN Ananthapadmanabhan, the third umpire for the ongoing match.

Check how ‘X’ reacted to Digvesh Singh Rathi’s controversial catch in IPL 2026 here

@IPL what is the use of spending lots on the technology when you can’t use it properly. Rathi took a catch on the boundary and touched the rope while taking the catch and the umpire didn’t bother to check technology. It’s an IPL NOT psl so use technology #iplindia2026 #playfair

Umpire took so much time for that Shami catch of Ajinkya Rahane but took no time in the decision of Finn Allen which clearly looked six.
PSL type umpiring

It’s good we can spend 15 minutes checking a wide that’s 3 feet over the batsman’s head but when deciding whether or not the biggest wicket in the game is out they just look at stuff like this for 5 seconds and send him on his way pic.twitter.com/JeI9aWjYq7

This isn’t just bad umpiring it’s embarrassing for the IPL.

Digvesh Rathi takes a catch right next to the boundary rope, running backwards and off balance and the umpires don’t even properly check if it’s clean?

No clear angles, no zoom on the rope, no proper review… just give… https://t.co/ZmLubwCoAg

🚨 POOR UMPIRING CONTINUES IN IPL

Digvesh Rathi today claimed Finn Allen’s catch at the boundary in KKR vs LSG match.

However, replays show Digvesh’s feet touched the boundary cushion while holding the ball.

🚨 Another controversial take in the IPL:

> Finn Allen smashed the ball.
> The ball went to third man.
> Digvesh Rathi took the catch
> But it seemed like he touched the boundary rope.
> However, neither Allen nor Rahane appealed,
> Even the umpires didn’t check it.

Unbelievable Catch taken by Digvesh Rathi, dismissed Finn Allen.

Finn Allen’s catch was taken by Digvesh Rathi, whose foot was touching the boundary. 👀

So why didn’t the third umpire check it? 🤔

That was clearly not out. If they can’t judge a simple catch properly, then what’s the point of calling this a big fair league? And why have so… pic.twitter.com/8XWSMZLnM9

🚨🚨 CONTROVERSY ON THE FINN ALLEN CATCH
