Worcestershire‘s County Championship Division Two fixture against Durham ended in a draw on September 15, 2026, after rain and bad light cut short a final-day chase.

Set a target of 253, Worcestershire had reached 32-1 when the weather intervened, leaving neither side with a result. Durham, who are Division Two champions in 2026, had posted 465 in their first innings, while Worcestershire replied with 448. Durham’s second innings closed at 235, setting up what looked like a competitive finish before the conditions took over.

“The weather has probably stopped either side getting a result. I am certainly not frustrated in the performance that we’ve put together, and I think for the majority of the game we have gone toe to toe with an outstanding cricket team who have played really well this year and have been the standout side in Division Two,” Worcestershire head coach Alan Richardson said, as quoted by the Ledbury Reporter.

How did Worcestershire’s batting hold up against Durham’s first-innings total?

Worcestershire’s reply of 448 was anchored by a significant middle-order partnership. Adam Hose reached his first red-ball hundred of the season off 238 balls and combined with Brett D’Oliveira in a stand worth 179 runs, giving the innings a solid foundation. Tom Taylor contributed 61 and Matthew Waite added 28 to bolster the lower order.

“I think Adam’s partnership with Brett was outstanding, on a wicket that was starting to go up and down a little bit and had a lateral movement throughout but had some nice pace in it against a really good bowling attack,” Richardson said.

Durham’s first-innings total of 465 was built during a dominant middle session on day one that placed Worcestershire under sustained pressure. Richardson reflected on that period, saying:

“Agarwal played exceptionally well and showed the high skill levels that he has, and the experience of Ben Stokes put us under a lot of pressure. So that middle session was a real tough one for us to get back from, but I think we recovered pretty well from that, but when you have 170 for one session or whatever it was, that makes it really difficult to get control of the game,” Richardson said.

What did Richardson take from the draw against Division Two champions?

Worcestershire’s bowlers gave the side a genuine chance of victory by dismissing six Durham batters in a single session on day three, bowling the visitors out for 235 in their second innings and setting up the 253-run target. That effort demonstrated that Worcestershire could compete with one of the division’s strongest outfits across four days of cricket. Richardson reflected on what the result revealed about where Worcestershire stand in the division.

“In one sense, it’s pleasing in the fact that we’ve shown that what we can do against a very good side but also highlights that we have to be more consistent for longer periods of time if we want to be competing at the top end,” he said.
