Christopher Nkunku and Chelsea: The Silence of The Fallen Bridge

After two years of injuries, tactical floundering, and unmet expectations, Christopher Nkunku and his Chelsea career is slated to end this summer. The 27-year-old French striker was acquired from RB Leipzig in 2023 for £52 million and has told club officials he wants to leave now, with Tottenham Hotspur and Bayern Munich likely to be the front-runners.

Christopher Nkunku came to Chelsea with the support of 47 goals in 119 Bundesliga appearances. But after suffering a significant knee injury in preseason, his debut stuck back to December 2023. This foreshadowed his frustrating career in west London. He made 42 appearances last season and scoring 14 goals. But just three in the Premier League, where he started in nine matches. During the Conference League final when Chelsea beat Real Betis, manager Enzo Maresca substituted Cole Palmer in the 88th minute of the game, replacing him with teenager Marc Guiu — meaning Nkunku had a very little impact on games and Guiu came on ahead of him.

Maresca publicly cited Nkunku’s exclusions solely because of, “technical reasons”, saying he needed to gain defensive balance in his system; “If you play with Cole [Palmer], Joao [Felix], Christo, Noni [Madueke]—who’s defending? Their ability is not to defend, it’s to attack.” The tactical misalignment he mentioned, along with Palmer’s development as Chelsea’s definitive playmaker, increasingly left Nkunku behind, vacillating between being a striker, winger, or No. 10, without getting any minutes when their skill was needed most. By April 2025, RMC Sport was reporting Nkunku was “now at the point of no return”, echoed by German transfer insider Florian Plettenberg said the exit was “now no longer in doubt.”

Chelsea are committing for a permanent transfer rather than a loan. Although they may come down somewhat from their initial asking price of €65 million (£55 million). Reports from multiple sources…… they could get to a fee of €55 million with add-ons. Important updates include:

Bayern Munich: Nkunku’s preferred destination, where they agreed personal terms way back in January. Talks broke off after Chelsea valued Nkunku and Bayern did not want to pay his €18 million salary. They considered a swap deal for Mathys Tel (valued around €40 million), although reports indicate that the hesitancy of Tel to leave Bayern hindered matters.

Tottenham Hotspur: Submitted an enquiry in an attempt to get a shock cross-London deal. Spurs think they can get a deal on the cheap. Although former scout Bryan King quoted on the value of Nkunku. He said Chelsea will “lose a lot of money.” Every source suggested getting Nkunku off the wage bill alone was a win.

Domestic Interest: Newcastle United even attempted to pursue a loan deal. However, Chelsea remain adamant a clean break is the only solution.

Nkunku is one of the 14 players Chelsea are trying to sell to bring in summer reinforcements. Although the player has a contract until 2029, the club knows it needs to make space for a player whose “best years are slipping away.” For Nkunku, its a chance at a fresh start and a kind of redemption. He can try to find the form that made him Germany’s most feared attacker.

For Chelsea, Nkunku’s release represents the harsh economics of modern football. A high-risk signing undone by circumstance, now sacrificed to give the club tactical and financial flexibility. With conversations moving at a rapid pace, Nkunku’s time in Chelsea ends not in glory, but in a silent resignation. Some stars and sometimes the bright ones wherever they shine, they just can’t do it at Stamford Bridge.
