Chelsea Hint at Joao Felix Exit as Essugo Takes No.14 Shirt

Chelsea might have just given their most straightforward signal yet about Joao Felix’s future. A big change seems to be happening at Stamford Bridge as it is confirmed that new signing Dario Essugo will wear the No. 14 shirt next year. Felix’s position at the club going forward is brought under great question, particularly as he veers further from Enzo Maresca’s ideas.

Felix joined Chelsea on a permanent transfer last summer in a £45 million move from Atletico Madrid. He had already fallen down the pecking order during the 2024/25 campaign. A loan to AC Milan followed, where his form failed to recover. As preparations begin for the Club World Cup in the United States, Felix has been left out of first-team squad. The quiet reassignment of his shirt number further points to an impending Joao Felix transfer.

The 19-year-old midfielder Dario Essugo joined Chelsea from Sporting CP and set to travel to the upcoming Club World Cup. His appointment to the No.14 shirt underscores the club’s belief in his long-term potential. Moreover, it also closes the door for Felix’s return to the squad in any meaningful capacity.

Felix, by contrast, battled last season to make a difference in his few chances. Although Chelsea spent a lot in his recruitment, he started just three Premier League matches. He scored only one goal and provided one assist in 12 outings. He scored three goals with just one in Serie A, even during his loan stint at AC Milan, when he was expected to revitalize his form.

Meanwhile, Essugo has been publicly welcomed into the first-team picture. The coaching staff views him as a rotational choice behind Moises Caicedo in midfield. Early in his Chelsea career, the Club World Cup presents him a prominent chance to impress, something Felix is increasingly out of reach for.

The reshuffling of Chelsea’s squad ahead of the summer tournament provides further evidence that a Joao Felix transfer is on the horizon. With the squad announcement due imminently, Felix is not expected to be among the names included. Other returning loanees like Andrey Santos have place in Maresca’s plans, but Felix appears firmly on the outside looking in.

Chelsea are also reportedly open to offloading several other players, including Raheem Sterling, Axel Disasi, Renato Veiga, Armando Broja, and Carney Chukwuemeka. The reallocation of shirt numbers has become symbolic under the new management. Trevoh Chalobah previously wore the No.14 before it was removed when he was made available for transfer. A similar path now seems likely for Felix.

The club’s investment in youth continues to define their transfer strategy. Alongside Essugo, other young talents such as Liam Delap, Estevão, and Dario Essugo have arrived as part of long-term rebuild. Their swift integration into the first team leaves little room for underperforming senior players.

Felix’s lack of impact in both London and Milan has only made matters worse. Once seen as one of Europe’s brightest attacking prospects, his value has diminished. With Cole Palmer and Jadon Sancho firmly ahead of him in the attacking hierarchy, it is difficult to envision a way back into the squad. The Joao Felix transfer seems less a question of “if” and more of “when.”

Chelsea’s quiet yet decisive move to hand Dario Essugo the No.14 shirt sends a clear message: Joao Felix is no longer part of the club’s future. With limited game time, poor form, and no mention in pre-season planning, all signs point to an exit in the coming weeks. The club’s transfer policy now favours youth, ambition, and squad balance — not reputation alone.
