Chelsea have officially named their 28-player roster for the much awaited FIFA Club World Cup in the United States. They announced a combination of young, talented players and a few eyebrow-raising absences. One among two Premier League sides, along with Manchester City, the Blues are getting ready to navigate a tough group including LAFC, Flamengo, and ES Tunis.
This year’s Club World Cup marks a revamped tournament format. The event is no longer regarded as a small competition as it has 32 teams competing and a reportedly £100 million prize at stake. Already possessing Champions League qualification for the following year, Chelsea will use this venue to not only fight for trophies but also to assess the cohesion and depth of their growing team.
Included are fresh faces like Liam Delap, Mamadou Sarr, Dario Essugo, and Mike Penders. Still, some well-known names have been left behind, fueling discussion and suspicion regarding the club’s selection process.

Though the omissions are probably even more illuminating, the Chelsea Club World Cup team comprises players expected to contribute immediately. Among those left out are Raheem Sterling, João Félix, Djordje Petrovic, Ben Chilwell, and Axel Disasi. All of them had spells apart from Stamford Bridge last year, and despite their separate reputations, they have not made the cut.
By giving continuity and squad harmony top importance, manager Enzo Maresca has justified the exclusions. With several loanees coming back into the team, Maresca decided to concentrate on players completely immersed in his tactical system. The move implies a clear emphasis on chemistry over individual status, a strategic gamble that may be profitable in a competition context.
Especially raising eyebrows was the exclusion of Djordje Petrovic. Tipped to move up after Chelsea missed in their pursuit of AC Milan‘s Mike Maignan, the Serbian goalkeeper had a great loan stint at Strasbourg. Despite expectations, the club has now indicated their desire to part ways with Petrovic permanently. Several European teams are said to be monitoring his situation.

Chelsea plan is not to bring any player out on loan during the season, apart from Andrey Santos.

Although Maresca might have named up to 35 players in the squad, the final list was restricted to 28. This suggests a deliberate strategy focused on tight squad dynamics rather than filling the roster for the sake of numbers. It also indicates a strong level of trust in the players selected.
Though he has great promise, new recruit Kendry Paez was likewise left out from the team. Paez only recently signed Chelsea from Independiente del Valle and is believed to go to Strasbourg on loan. Mathis Amougou is in the same situation; another bright young player likely to get experience elsewhere before vying for a place in Chelsea’s senior team.
Renato Veiga, Juventus loanee, reportedly hoped to be included in the team but was omitted. Highlighting the astonishment experienced by both player and club over the ultimate decision, Juventus were also willing to prolong his stay for the competition.
Maresca’s measured approach also seems to match the club’s recent transfer window activity. Chelsea brought in four fresh signings worth about £90 million during the brief registration window, which allowed Club World Cup teams. Everyone was immediately included, emphasizing a dedication to quickly integrating and forming the team for success.
The revised Club World Cup structure has changed the event into a more relevant title. Played every four years and including top clubs from all across, the competition now has more renown and financial value.
Chelsea’s objective is obvious. Winning is still the goal in every game maresca plays, they have reminded us. The Blues approach the competition with understated confidence since they have a good group and strong league finish.
The Chelsea Club World Cup team could not include every fan-favorite name, but it shows a bold, forward-thinking strategy. Though it remains to be seen if that risk will pay off, the desire is clear.
