Chelsea bid for Mohammed Kudus to sign from West Ham United have stalled. This came in following rejection of an opening offer from the Hammers. The Ghanaian international is among the best performers in the Premier League. He provided quality performances ever since he signed from Ajax for a fee in region of £38 million last summer. Hence, the top clubs are monitoring his situation and exploring if an offer would be acceptable for him. Chelsea bid for Mohammed Kudus was to strengthen their attack and to achieve this, they see Kudus as a key target. However their initial offer was in vain which puts an element of rivalry around the deal.
Mohammed Kudus signed with West Ham from Ajax in the summer of 2023. He was soon known for dribbling, creativity, and finishing. Kudus got accustomed to the atmosphere of the Premier League very quickly from pre-season onwards. His unreal speed, close control, and ability to score from distance have led to comparisons with some of the best attackers in the league. He provided 10+ goal contributions in his first Premier League season. That is why Chelsea want him at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea’s interest in Kudus comes as they continue their pursuit to increase their attacking options. After having Cole Palmer, Raheem Sterling, and Christopher Nkunku, they are still showing inconsistent performances and goal scoring. With Kudus’ ability to play across the front line and his proven experience in the Premier League, the team are looking for him to come in and perform in various roles in Mauricio Pochettino’s system.
Reports indicate Chelsea’s first offer was around £50 million, but West Ham soon rejected it. Right now, the Hammers need no money, hold nothing but value in Kudus, and probably value him with respect to how important he is in their team, alongside a long-term contract until 2028, one can appreciate the Hammers go into overdrive on any transfer speculation. West Ham’s position is clear, if Chelsea want him, they are going to have to pay a premium price.
With their first bid rejected, Chelsea must now consider whether or not to bid higher for Mohammed Kudus. The Blues are not afraid to pay big money for their desired players as evidenced by their signings of Moisés Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez, but they also have to keep in mind Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations and are restricted in how much they can spend this summer.
One way around this, is to swap players and limit the amount of cash Chelsea would have to spend. West Ham might show their interest in one or two of Chelsea’s fringe players, such as Armando Broja or Trevoh Chalobah, and use them as makeweights in any deal. However, that will still require Chelsea to put enough actual cash on the table to convince West Ham to let him go.
If they are not able to sign Kudus, Chelsea would then have to look at other attacking options. Players they have also been linked with are Michael Olise from Crystal Palace and Nico Williams of Athletic club, but Kudus would be the first choice option to sign with his experience in the Premier League and ability to impact a game immediately.
Chelsea aren’t the only side keeping tabs on the situation with Kudus. Arsenal and Liverpool have previously reported in showing interest in the player as well. If West Ham were to become willing to negotiate a sale, the Blues would have to contend with other clubs for the player’s services. Moreover, Kudus may actually prefer to spend a second season at West Ham. Here, he remains assured of regular playing status and a key role in manager Julen Lopetegui’s team.

But if Chelsea can tempt him with the chance to play in the UEFA Champions League (in seasons where they qualify), and also to play on a bigger stage, would Kudus say no? His ambition, and current standing suggests that he will eventually want to leave West Ham, at least for a club operating at the highest levels.
For now, Kudus is a West Ham player. The Hammers fans will hope he can continue to build on an excellent season like last year. However, as we progress through the summer transfer window, this could develop into one of the more interesting sagas. Chelsea are more than likely to once again, test the resolve of West Ham of selling Kudus. If this develops, into a potential deal will measured that how much the Blues are willing to spend. Moreover, if Kudus puts pressure on West Ham for a move to Chelsea.
