CAF Inter-Clubs preliminary stage: Kotoko advance, GoldStars bow out

Asante Kotoko have booked a high-profile CAF Confederation Cup clash with Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca after eliminating Nigeria’s Kwara United in the second qualifying round.

The Porcupine Warriors advanced with a 5–3 aggregate victory, sealing progression courtesy of a disciplined 1–0 away win in Abeokuta on Sunday. Hubert Gyau’s decisive strike added to their thrilling 4–3 first-leg triumph in Kumasi, ensuring Kotoko’s passage to the next stage.

Kotoko’s reward is a meeting with Wydad, one of Africa’s most decorated clubs. The Casablanca-based side are three-time CAF Champions League winners and featured in the expanded FIFA Club World Cup earlier this year. Kotoko themselves boast two African Cup of Champions Clubs titles but, like Wydad, are still chasing a maiden Confederation Cup crown.

The two clubs’ pedigree promises one of the competition’s standout ties. Kotoko will host the first leg at Kumasi’s Baba Yara Stadium, before travelling to Morocco for the decisive return fixture in October, a test that offers the Ghanaian giants a prime opportunity to measure themselves against elite continental opposition in their quest for silverware.

Elsewhere, Bibiani GoldStars’ maiden CAF Champions League campaign ended in disappointment as they suffered a 5–0 defeat to Algerian heavyweights JS Kabylie in Tizi Ouzou on Sunday, sealing a 7–0 aggregate exit in the preliminary round.

GoldStars’ continental journey thus ends at the first hurdle, and the Ghana Premier League champions must now regroup and turn their focus toward defending their domestic crown.
