Brendan Taylor breaks Sachin Tendulkar's record for longest career in men's ODIs

Brendan Taylor surpassed Sachin Tendulkar’s record for the longest career in men’s One-Day Internationals on September 15, 2026, when he appeared in the first ODI of a three-match series against Australia in Harare. The milestone extended Taylor’s ODI career to 22 years and 148 days, moving him past Tendulkar’s previous benchmark of 22 years and 91 days.

The 40-year-old Zimbabwe wicketkeeper-batter first represented his country in ODI cricket in April 2004, facing Sri Lanka in what would become the opening chapter of an extraordinarily long international journey. Before stepping onto the Harare ground on Tuesday, Taylor had scored 6,704 runs across 207 ODI appearances, with 11 centuries to his name.

Tendulkar, whose record has now been overtaken, remains the undisputed leader in ODI run-scoring with 18,426 runs from 463 matches. Taylor’s achievement is confined to the calendar span between a player’s first and most recent ODI appearance, leaving Tendulkar’s records for runs and matches entirely intact.

What led to Taylor’s return to international cricket after his ban?

Taylor stepped away from international cricket in 2021 after disclosing that he had been approached with a match-fixing offer in 2019. The International Cricket Council responded by imposing a ban from all forms of cricket for three and a half years, a period Taylor served in full before becoming eligible to return.

Zimbabwe recalled him to their squad in 2025 as the country ramped up preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup, which South Africa and Namibia will jointly host. His reintegration into the national setup stretched his career timeline well beyond what had seemed conceivable when he retired, ultimately placing him in position to claim a record that had stood in Tendulkar’s name for years.

Where does Taylor’s career span rank in the all-time list?

Taylor’s span of 22 years and 148 days places him at the summit of the all-time list for the longest ODI career in men’s cricket. Tendulkar, whose career covered 22 years and 91 days, now occupies second position on that particular measure.

Sri Lanka’s Sanath Jayasuriya is third on the list, his ODI career having stretched across 21 years and 184 days. The gap between Taylor’s record and Jayasuriya’s third-placed mark exceeds eight months, which reflects how far ahead of the broader field both Taylor and Tendulkar sit in terms of career longevity.
