Black Starlets End Preparations with Narrow Defeat to Mali

The Black Starlets wrapped up their preparations for the 2026 U17 Africa Cup of Nations with a narrow 1-0 defeat to Mali in their final friendly game played on Sunday in Mohammadia, Morocco.

A solitary own goal in the 65th minute separated the two sides in a fiercely contested encounter, as the Starlets produced an encouraging performance despite failing to find the back of the net.

The Black Starlets created several promising chances across both halves and came close on multiple occasions, but the Malian goalkeeper stood tall throughout the game with a series of impressive saves to deny the Ghanaian attack.

The team’s movement, pressing, and attacking combinations showed flashes of quality as they continued fine-tuning preparations ahead of the continental tournament.

While the result did not go in Ghana’s favour, Head Coach Dr. Prosper Narteh Ogum expressed satisfaction with the overall display and believes the game provided the exact challenge his side needed before the start of the competition.

“This was the type of test we needed ahead of the AFCON. Mali gave us intensity, discipline, and competition at a very high level, and I’m happy with how the boys responded,” Coach Ogum said after the match.

The coach praised his players for their attitude and tactical discipline, insisting the performance offered many positives despite the defeat.

“We created enough chances to win the game, but sometimes football is like that. What is important for me is the way the boys approached the game, their movement, their pressing, and their confidence on the ball. These are things we can build on heading into the tournament.”

Coach Ogum also emphasized that the defeat would serve as a learning experience for the squad as they prepare to compete against Africa’s best youth sides.

“At this stage, results are secondary to preparation. We have identified a few areas to improve, and that is exactly why these matches are important. I am convinced the team will be ready when the tournament starts.”

The Black Starlets are expected to depart their camping base in Mohammedia on Monday for Rabat, where the 2026 U17 AFCON will be staged.
