Benjamin White snubbed: Tuchel explains England omission

Thomas Tuchel has given a rare publicly explanation as to why Benjamin White is not with the England national team. Despite impressing throughout the 2024/25 season, Gareth Southgate snubbed the Arsenal centre-back again when he announced the latest Three Lions squad, sparking mixed reactions from fans and pundits.

Returing to his punditry position with German broadcaster ZDF, Tuchel explained that the move was “tactical and relationship-based” as oppose to an on the pitch decision. “Benjamin White is one of the best technical defenders in England right now,” Tuchel noted. “But international squads are not just about form—they’re about dynamics, trust, and understanding the manager’s expectations.”

WHITE NOISE

There’s some wonderful content about Ben White out today. To add to the volume, here’s an excerpt from today’s newsletter: a thread about the complexities and burdens of his particular role. 🧵 pic.twitter.com/SQH6WPqlZi

And though Tuchel did not speak for Southgate, he suggested there could possibly be greater concerns at play factoring into the decision. The ex-Chelsea manager brought up previous stories of a minor disagreement between White and England staff during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. “You can be brilliant on the pitch, but sometimes the off-pitch chemistry matters just as much,” Tuchel added.

White, a constant presence in Mikel Arteta’s team, proved adaptable in a right-back role and stepping up to fill in at centre-back when required. His ability to surge forward and connect play in the middle of the park has made him a key figure in Arsenal’s title challenging season. Even so, Southgate has still preferred the likes of Kyle Walker, Kieran Trippier and Trent Alexander-Arnold in England’s defensive berths.

Benjamin White himself has not stated as much about being left out, fitting with his low-attention profile. But the player’s inner circle claim the defender is all about the Arsenal cause and dismiss the fact he is untarnished by the international stage.

Arteta has frequently complimented White’s mentality and versatility, and described him as “a player who does the job with quality and comfort.” He has formed a strong centre-back pairing with William Saliba which has been a key factor in making Arsenal one of the best defensive teams in the country this season, contributing to the club’s highest clean sheet tally in the Premier League.

UNSUNG HERO

While everyone is praising our monstrous CB pairing, Ben White has been playing while carrying a severe knock which could require surgery later. Playing through pain to keep our title / CL run alive while Tomi / Timber recover.

Go easy on him

Southgate was also grilled on White’s omission at a recent press conference. He wouldn’t get into details, but again said he is prioritizing “team cohesion” and “players who’ve been in the system.” Though the statement was far from a screed, it fanned the flames of speculation that interpersonal relations, not play, are keeping White off the floor.

Supporters have flooded social media to vent their rage for the decision labelled by some as “a waste of talent” and begged Southgate to “rebuild bridges” before the Euros. As England prepare for the tournament, the pressure on the manager to justify his selections continues to mount.

From a football perspective and a football perspective alone, Benjamin White is an understandable omission. As Arsenal’s form attests, his ability to play in a variety of roles is the sort of boon national coaches would kill for. But national team picks hardly ever occur in a void.

Tuchel’s hints, however veiled, highlight the reality that in the end, personal relationships and emotional intelligence can play a significant hand in who stays and who goes. If some prior misunderstanding or personality clash is why they’re leaving White out, it proves how big soft skills matter—even at the highest level.

Still, you can’t help thinking that England can afford to keep that quality on the bench. Whether Southgate is able to dress wounds or if he stays strong will, in all probability, be one of the narratives to watch in the months pre-dating the Euros. For now, Arsenal fans will happily keep their star defender looking new, rested, and laser-focused on Premier League glory.
