The Board of Control for Cricket in India has extended the IPL player retention deadline by two days, moving it from November 15 to November 17, 2026. All ten franchises were informed of the change on Monday, November 2, giving them additional time to finalise their retained player lists before submitting them to the board. The mini-auction, confirmed for December 16 in Goa, remains on schedule.

The original November 15 cut-off had already been set with the Goa auction in mind, but a scheduling development prompted the board to reconsider. The fifth and final ODI of the India-New Zealand series falls on that same date, with the match set to take place at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui. The BCCI’s decision to extend the window to November 17 appears designed to give franchise management, players and support staff a cleaner administrative day, free from the demands of an ongoing international fixture.

Why did the BCCI shift the retention deadline?

Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui hosts the concluding game of the India-New Zealand ODI series on November 15, the date that had originally served as the retention cut-off. With franchise stakeholders and players connected to the Indian squad likely to have their attention on that bilateral contest, the BCCI opted to create a two-day buffer. Moving the deadline to November 17 separates the administrative process from the international calendar and allows all parties to complete their submissions without distraction.

Interestingly, a comparable overlap appears on the December calendar as well. The second ODI of India’s home series against Sri Lanka is scheduled for December 16 at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, which is the same day as the Goa mini-auction. However, the BCCI has so far given no indication that the auction date will be adjusted to accommodate that concurrent fixture, and the December 16 schedule stands as announced.

What happens next with the IPL mini-auction?

Franchises now have until November 17 to lock in their retained players and submit the official lists to the BCCI. Once those retentions are confirmed, every released player enters the pool that will be available at the Goa auction on December 16. The revised deadline leaves roughly four weeks between the retention cut-off and auction day, giving the board time to process the lists, calculate each franchise’s remaining salary purse and circulate the final auction catalogue.

Franchises will have until November 17 to complete their retention and release process, following which the player registration window will close on November 23. Teams will then have until December 1 to submit their final list of player choices for the auction. The final auction register, including the player sets, will be released on December 3.
