Xavier Bartlett will return to red-ball cricket for Queensland in the Sheffield Shield 2026-27 season opener against Western Australia at the WACA Ground in Perth, starting October 10, 2026. The right-arm quick has been cleared to bowl without any over restrictions after returning from Australia’s ODI tour of South Africa, where he took 2 for 25 in the final match of the series.

Bartlett will lead Queensland’s pace attack in Perth without two of the state’s senior quicks. Michael Neser is currently with the Australian Test squad in South Africa, while Mark Steketee is working his way back from hamstring surgery. A regular in Australia’s white-ball sides, he has yet to stake a claim for a place in the Test side. Queensland coach James Hopes said that Bartlett’s return from

“I know there’s players being picked in front of him at the moment, but I think the ability for him to come off an Australian tour now and actually play some games, he’s coming back to us available and unrestricted, which is a big thing. He’s played in the last couple of years. I know there’s been some Shield games where there’s been an over limit put on the amount he can bowl. But he’s coming into these games, he’s really excited about the fact that he can just play the game, and if he’s got to bowl 35-40 overs, he’s got to bowl 35-40 overs. And his record is very good,” Hopes said, as quoted by Cricinfo.

What does Bartlett’s first-class record show?

Bartlett has accumulated 111 first-class wickets at an average of 25.77 from 32 matches, including three five-wicket hauls. Those figures place him among the more productive pace bowlers in Australian domestic cricket at his level.

The 27-year-old also averages 25.06 with the bat in first-class cricket, with six half-centuries to his name, three of which came in his last six innings. He struck a 28-ball fifty in the second ODI against South Africa, further demonstrating his value lower in the order. Hopes pointed to Bartlett’s batting development as an additional factor in his Test case.

“If you start to look at his batting a bit closer, he’s actually starting to get into the bowling allrounder kind of category. He scores runs pretty consistently across formats now. He was a pleasant surprise in the IPL with the way that he could bat at the end of the innings,” he said.

Despite his record, Bartlett has been passed over for Test selection in recent times, with Michael Neser, Brendan Doggett, Jhye Richardson and Sean Abbott all earning Test squad places ahead of him. Bartlett has, however, represented Australia A in red-ball cricket. Last summer he managed only three Shield matches plus two other first-class games for Australia A, owing to white-ball commitments and bowling over limits.

What is Bartlett’s immediate programme before the home ODI series?

Three Sheffield Shield matches are scheduled before Australia’s home ODI series against England begins on November 13, 2026. Those games represent Bartlett’s clearest opportunity to build a red-ball case with unrestricted bowling loads across full four-day matches.

Hopes confirmed that Bartlett has returned from South Africa with no bowling restrictions in place, which he described as a significant development given the limitations placed on the quick in previous Shield campaigns.

“He’s got some upsides. I’m really happy that they just haven’t kept him in South Africa to sit on the bench. He’s got the ability to come back and actually play some meaningful cricket where he can push his case forward in long-form cricket. Because I think once he starts to play this format consistently again, I think his stocks will rise pretty quick for Test cricket.”
