As the Black Queens prepare for their crunch WAFCON 2026 quarter-final against Malawi, head coach Kim Lars Björkegren struck a cautious, optimistic tone mixed with tactical clarity. Addressing the media on the eve of the tie, Björkegren acknowledged the threat posed by the Malawian frontline but insisted his side has the tools to progress—and with it, secure a historic World Cup berth.
“They are a pretty good, hard-working group,” Björkegren said, recalling a recent friendly that ended as a “very physical game.” He singled out two Malawian attackers as “world-class,” warning that they would demand special attention. However, he refused to let that fear dictate his game plan. “We can’t just defend with 11 players. We need to find a balance do what we can to defend against them, but also believe in ourselves, keep the ball, and take care of our chances a little better than we have done so far.”
He pointed to the team’s upward trajectory in the tournament as reason for belief. “We improved in the second half against Cameroon, and we did a good full game against Mali. If we keep doing the right things, hopefully it’s going to be a fun game tomorrow.”
But this is no ordinary knockout match. The winner does not just reach a continental semi-final—they book a ticket to the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
“We know we’re going to play one of the most important games in Ghanaian women’s football in 20 years,” he said. “The girls know it, the coaches know it, everybody at the FA knows it. We will do everything we can to make sure Ghana has a national team playing in Brazil next year. It’s a big platform where every player wants to showcase their talent to the world.”
When pressed on defensive strategy, Björkegren stressed that the key is not to lose structural discipline. “The balance is how you defend without losing your own shape, your own performance, and your own way to attack. We have to play our game, not just react to theirs.”
