In a major event Arsenal submit a win as the Gunners secure their future ambitions, 18-year-old Myles Lewis-Skelly has signed a long-term deal with the club. The deal which included a significant pay increase was negotiated with his mother and agent Marcia Lewis. After several ends months of speculation to reward his breakout 2024-25 season, Lewis-Skelly joined Arsenal’s first team and rose to prominence.

While Lewis-Skelly’s last contract didn’t run out until 2026, Arsenal rushed to secure their future through his signature. Although there were still interest from European heavyweights including Real Madrid. With the pay rise, Lewis-Skelly will now become one of the highest paid young players in the world. Nonetheless, we believe this is a credit to the impact he had last year. He debuted in a fighting 2-2 draw against Manchester City in September. When it comes to Lewis-Skelly in this game, he far exceeded all of the expectations and went on to play 39 times in all competitions last season. Unbelievably, he came through the academy as a midfielder, and has developed into Arsenal’s first-choice left-back.

Manager Mikel Arteta had a key presence in negotiations given his warm rapport with the teenager. Arteta’s confidence in Lewis-Skelly’s flexibility and football intelligence was an important part of the equation. The basis of said flexibility was invaluable to the Gunners side. To that regard Arteta said: “In six-seven months your career can change so much. It doesn’t happen because you are lucky. You earned it by kicking for every opportunity”. Because of this work-rate, Lewis-Skelly received a senior England call-up in March, and he scored in a 2-0 victory over Albania at Wembley. At just 18 years and 176 days he became the youngest debutant to score for the Three Lions. He has also gained recognition for his performances with a PFA Young Player of the Year nomination alongside ex Hale End graduate Ethan Nwaneri .

Analysts have noted Lewis-Skelly’s obvious adaptation to left-back, these adaptations are perceived as “unflustered, press-resistant” in style, but also have central off-the-ball tendencies during build-ups like a midfielder. Senior data writer Mark Carey was impressed, saying, “these are traits you usually see in a stalwart midfielder who is in the prime of their career” . He showed his “big-game mentality” with a commanding performance against club heavyweights like Real Madrid in the Champions League. Despite being in the media spotlight now, from knee-jerk reactions to some of his red cards, and learning from a few sharp media people – his “incredible work ethic” and the mature personality now demonstrated to the world also takes the absurdity out of the mug-shot controversy knowingly and unknowingly.

Lewis-Skelly seems to follow Gabriel Magalhaes’ new deal, as Arsenal turn their focus on the retention of its main players. Talks continue with Bukayo Saka, William Saliba and Ethan Nwaneri; but the last of these is now firmly on Arsenal’s radar following Lewis-Skelly’s confirmation of terms with Arsenal. Following Lewis-Skelly’s signing, the club has proactively addressed transfer concerns and stated its commitment to the project under Arteta. As Lewis-Skelly himself said earlier this year: “Arteta is a genius. He pays such attention to detail”.

For Arsenal, to sign this impressive talent isn’t just another contract negotiation, it represents a commitment. Lewis-Skelly shows the club the balance it has of youth development and elite ambition, and ensures the Gunners’ spine is homegrown for years to come.
