Steve Smith was struck on the helmet by a bouncer from Anrich Nortje during Australia’s second innings on the fourth day of the first Test against South Africa in Durban. The incident occurred on the fifth ball of the 13th over when Nortje’s delivery struck Smith’s helmet and flew towards fine leg. Smith ducked to avoid the short-pitched delivery that did not bounce as high as he expected. The team physio and doctor assessed the 37-year-old batter on the field, and his helmet was replaced before he resumed batting.

Smith went on to score 27 off 41 balls before being caught at long-on off Simon Harmer. Despite the blow to his helmet, he continued his innings and contributed to Australia’s eventual 214-run victory in the match. However, the physical impact of the incident was accompanied by significant psychological effects that Smith later described in detail.

“I was a little bit anxious to be honest after the hit. I’ve had a few in the past, and had a few concussions and I really don’t like the way that makes me feel,” said Smith as quoted by The West Australian.

The anxiety that followed the Durban incident extended beyond the immediate aftermath of the blow. Smith described how his mental state affected him throughout the remainder of that day.

“The rest of that day I wasn’t travelling too well. I think it was more to do with anxiety of hoping not to feel the way that I felt in the past, waking up the next morning and things like that,” Smith said.

The uncertainty about whether he would experience concussion symptoms overnight created additional psychological pressure.

Smith did not take the field when South Africa began their second innings, with substitute fielder Michael Neser taking his place in the cordon. However, he was cleared of concussion after medical assessments and returned to the field on day five of the first Test. His return to the field was marked by a catch to dismiss Kyle Verreynne, demonstrating his readiness to continue contributing to the team’s efforts.

“Fortunately I woke up well. I passed all the tests and things recovered pretty quickly,” Smith said.
