James Anderson has described himself as ‘shocked’ after Lancashire decided not to renew his contract following the 2026 County Championship season, and the 44-year-old has not yet made up his mind about whether to continue playing for another county. The announcement came on October 22, 2026.

The decision was taken by incoming director of cricket Paul Farbrace, who held a meeting with Anderson alongside Lancashire’s new chief executive Richard Kenyon. Despite Anderson’s efforts with the ball, Lancashire finished second bottom in Division Two of the County Championship.

Anderson had captained Lancashire through the 2026 County Championship season and claimed 50 wickets at an average of 17, yet the club’s new leadership concluded they needed to build a younger attack.

“I went in for what I thought was a conversation about how the team moves forward. It wasn’t a great year for the team. Being captain I thought it was chat about that. A couple of minutes in I realised it wasn’t a conversation. I was being told they thought the best way for the team to move forward was without me. I was quite shocked. It was quite brief,” Anderson said on the Tailenders Podcast, as quoted by BBC Sport.

Anderson’s former England team-mate and bowling partner Stuart Broad criticised the manner of the departure, saying it showed a lack of leadership given the veteran was not given a farewell and calling it ‘pretty disrespectful’. Lancashire members were also reported to be angered by the decision. The source had also earlier reported that other counties are interested in signing Anderson, who turns 45 next summer in July 2027.

Why did Lancashire release Anderson?

Lancashire’s new hierarchy communicated to Anderson that they wanted to build an attack for the future rather than continue with a bowler who will be 45 next summer. The club’s position in Division Two, finishing second bottom despite Anderson’s 50 wickets in the season, appears to have reinforced that view among the incoming leadership.

The situation carries a parallel with what happened at international level. In 2024, England also chose to move on from Anderson in similarly abrupt circumstances, looking to refresh and build their pace attack ahead of the 2025-26 Ashes series in Australia.

“All of the way through the season myself and the head coach were like ‘is it something we are doing? Could we be doing more to help the team? I finished the season thinking ‘was it something I did? Was I doing something wrong?’ – and then I get this news. Now I am thinking that even more. I am thinking ‘this is happening again. Is there something fundamentally wrong with me as a person?’ Your head just sort of races. I wanted to see my career out with Lancs. I don’t know if my career is done, we will have to wait and see, but it would be nice at some point if someone would let me retire,” Anderson said.

What next for Anderson after leaving Lancashire?

Anderson has not ruled out continuing his career at another county, and it is understood several clubs have expressed interest in signing him. When asked about the possibility of joining Lancashire’s historic rivals Yorkshire, he joked about the idea but made clear no decision has been taken.

“It has been 10 days since it happened. I am starting to get excited about the future, whether it is something different or playing cricket again. It is exciting. There are exciting challenges ahead. I have to attack it like that and not dwell too much on how or why it finished at Lancs. I am sad the way it ended with the club I supported as a kid but now I have thought about it I am quite excited for the future. I am always going to support Lancashire. I was born there, grew up watching them, had some of my most memorable days out with dad watching them, got to play for them and captain the club, which is something most people dream about. I feel like I have a special connection with the club and will always support them,” Anderson concluded.

Anderson first appeared in List A cricket in 2000 as a 17-year-old, representing the Lancashire Cricket Board against Suffolk. Over his career with Lancashire he accumulated 443 first-class wickets for the county, along with 83 in List A cricket and a further 50 in T20 cricket. Across all international formats, Anderson holds the record of 911 wickets, the highest tally ever recorded by a pace bowler and the England all-format record.
