West Ham United’s first win at Old Trafford since 2007 piled on Manchester United’s misery after the Hammers swept past the Red Devils 2-0 in the Premier League match on Sunday. Tomas Soucek and Jarrod Bowen struck in West Ham’s win, which meant United now have lost 17 games in the Premier League this season, with nine of them coming on home turf.
After the high of last week, when United brushed aside Athletic Bilbao’s challenge to reach the UEFA Europa League final, the Ruben Amorim-managed side was quick to be thrashed. An outraged Amorim said there is a “lack of urgency in everything we do” and a worrying mentality at a club sitting 16th in the standings.
“For me the biggest concern is that feeling that ‘it’s OK’, and ‘we cannot change our position so much so it’s OK’,” said Amorim.
“That is the biggest problem in our club in this moment because we are losing the feeling of we are a massive club and it’s the end of the world to lose a game at home. I think that is the biggest concern in our club,” he was quoted as saying by Sky Sports.
, United barely scraped the relegation spot.
Asked how it feels to see his side in 16th with two matches to go, the United head coach said, “How a manager of Manchester United is supposed to feel in that position – embarrassed, and it’s hard to accept.
“I think everybody has to think seriously about a lot of things here.
“Everybody is thinking about the (Europa League) final. The final is not the issue. We have bigger things to think about. I’m talking about myself and the culture in the club and the culture in the team. We need to change that. It’s a decisive moment in the history of the club,” he added.
Amorim was roped in to replace Erik ten Hag last November, but there has been no improvement, with the team languishing in 16th position. United have only beaten relegated Ipswich Town and Leicester City in the league since January 26 and are on their joint-worst winless run in the Premier League of seven games.
United are without a league title since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013, and Amorim said it is “the most dangerous feeling that you have in a big club.”
