Sydney Sixers defeated Hobart Hurricanes by 87 runs in the seventh match of WBBL 2026-27 at Drummoyne Oval on November 1, 2026 with skipper Ashleigh Gardner producing one of the tournament’s most complete individual performances to lift her side to a commanding total and then dismantle the Hurricanes’ reply.

Gardner walked in with the Sixers in early trouble at 6 for 3 in the third over and proceeded to strike 124 off just 60 balls, an innings that included 10 fours and 9 sixes. It is the fourth-highest individual score in WBBL history and Gardner’s second century in the competition. The team recovered to post 196, a total that proved well beyond the defending champions. England batter Alice Capsey provided crucial support, finishing unbeaten on 54 off 40 balls. Together, Gardner and Capsey put on 176 runs for the fourth wicket, a partnership that transformed the innings entirely after the Sixers’ shaky start.

Hobart’s chase never gained momentum. The Hurricanes were reduced to 26 for 5 in the eighth over and eventually bowled out for 109, handing the Sixers an 87-run victory. The result moves Sydney to 2-0 for the season, while the defending champions Hobart slip to 0-2. Elsewhere in Sunday’s double-header, Brisbane Heat posted 178 for 5, a target Sydney Thunder overhauled with 6 wickets and 20 balls to spare, making it the third successive high-scoring innings of the day.

How did Gardner and the Sixers’ bowlers dismantle the Hurricanes?

After Gardner’s dismissal, the Sixers’ bowlers carried the momentum into the field. Gardner herself returned to take 3 wickets with the ball, adding a telling bowling contribution to her century. Spinner Melie Kerr swept through the lower order, finishing with 3 for 25 to help wrap up the Hurricanes’ innings.

In the third over of Hobart’s chase, Rachel Trenaman dismissed Chamari Athapaththu, and 17-year-old quick Caoimhe Bray took 2 for 14 to further expose the Hurricanes’ batting. Lizelle Lee was caught and Nicola Carey was bowled in quick succession, with Gardner striking on the very first ball she bowled to remove Lee. Gardner then bowled Chenille Henry, who had made 32 off 20 balls and was the most aggressive of the Hurricanes’ middle-order contributors.

The only other batter to offer meaningful resistance was Maddy Green, who remained unbeaten on 42 off 33 balls, but her effort was not enough to prevent Hobart from being dismissed for 109.

What does Gardner’s knock mean in the context of WBBL records?

Gardner’s 124 is the fourth-highest individual score in WBBL history, underlining the scale of what she achieved at Drummoyne Oval. It was also her second century in the competition, confirming her standing as one of the format’s most destructive batters.

Only Grace Harris had previously scored a century and taken at least three wickets in the same WBBL match, a distinction Gardner now shares. The all-round nature of the performance, a 60-ball hundred followed by three wickets with the ball, made it one of the standout individual displays of the WBBL 2026-27 season so far.
