The 2026 ODI season revealed a stark contrast in run-scoring prowess between two prominent Indian batsmen. KL Rahul accumulated 323 runs across 10 matches and 8 innings, while Shreyas Iyer managed 219 runs from 9 matches and 9 innings during the same calendar year. This 104-run gap underscores differing levels of consistency and impact in the format.
The statistical disparity extends well beyond raw run totals. Rahul’s average of 80.75 substantially exceeds Iyer’s 27.37, reflecting markedly different levels of consistency and match-winning ability. Rahul struck two centuries during the year, including an unbeaten 129, whereas Iyer registered one half-century with a highest score of 66 and no centuries. Rahul remained unbeaten on four occasions, demonstrating his capacity to finish matches decisively.
Rahul’s aggressive batting approach is evident in his strike rate of 136.28, which encompassed 29 fours and 11 sixes across his 2026 ODI innings. In contrast, Iyer’s strike rate of 84.55 reflects a more measured batting approach, with 13 fours and 6 sixes in his tally. The boundary distribution reveals Rahul’s willingness to accelerate scoring, particularly through the six-hitting avenue, where he outpaced Iyer by five maximums.

Career milestone and overall assessment
Iyer reached a significant career milestone during June 2026 when he scored his 3,000th run in ODIs, a notable achievement reflecting his long-standing contribution to Indian cricket across the format. This milestone, achieved across 9 matches and 9 innings in 2026, underscores his experience despite the statistical gap with Rahul in the calendar year.
The comparison demonstrates that while both players remain integral to India’s ODI setup, the wicketkeeper-batter’s consistency and strike rate in 2026 positioned him as the more impactful run-scorer during the period. Iyer’s career milestone and half-century highlight his continued relevance, yet the numbers favour Rahul’s overall performance across the year.
