Zimbabwe’s top-order collapse in the tri-series final against Afghanistan on October 23, 2026 has prompted captain Sikandar Raza to demand a fundamental shift in his team’s approach. Zimbabwe reached 26 for 3 in 7 overs before being bowled out for 169, allowing Afghanistan to chase down the target with 7 wickets in hand and 93 balls remaining in Sharjah.

Raza spoke about the pattern of early batting failures that has defined Zimbabwe’s tournament. He pointed to Zimbabwe’s record against Afghanistan, noting that his team has lost their last eight ODIs against the opposition dating back to 2022, with their most recent victory coming in March 2018. The captain acknowledged this as a concerning statistic that reflects deeper issues in how Zimbabwe approaches their innings.

“If Zimbabwe hasn’t won an ODI against Afghanistan in the last eight years, then that is a poor record to have,” said Raza as quoted by Cricinfo.

He then turned his focus to the immediate problem affecting his team’s performance throughout the tri-series.

“The one thing we need to get right is that Zimbabwe cannot be 24 for 3 every game. This thing has been hurting us,” Raza added.

Why Zimbabwe must stop relying on rescue missions?

The pattern of early collapses has been consistent across Zimbabwe’s three matches in the tournament. Against Bangladesh, Zimbabwe reached 24 for 3 in 7 overs. In their group-stage encounter with Afghanistan, they fell to 26 for 3 in 7.1 overs. The final repeated this troubling sequence when Zimbabwe again found themselves at 26 for 3 in 7 overs. Brian Bennett’s 31 in the previous game against Afghanistan remained the only notable contribution from the top order across the series.

Raza reflected on the moments when Zimbabwe have managed to recover from these precarious positions. He highlighted the partnership between Brendan Taylor and Craig Ervine in the Bangladesh match, where the two batsmen added 150 runs for the fourth wicket to stabilise the innings. In the final itself, Raza contributed 68 runs to Zimbabwe’s total. However, he stressed that such recoveries cannot be the foundation of consistent success.

Raza drew on the wisdom of a former coach to articulate his concern about Zimbabwe’s approach.

“Lance Klusener, always used to say that Zimbabwe is playing rescue missions all the time. The beauty of a rescue mission is not every rescue mission will be successful,”‘ Raza explained.

He applied this observation directly to Zimbabwe’s performance in the tri-series, saying that relying on late-order heroics rather than solid top-order batting represents a fundamental flaw in their strategy.

How Zimbabwe’s bowlers performed despite the heat?

Despite the batting struggles, Raza had praise for Zimbabwe’s fast bowlers, who performed consistently throughout the tournament despite the challenging conditions in the UAE. He highlighted Newman Nyamhuri’s pace bowling, noting that the young bowler is still developing but is bowling with increasing confidence. Raza also commended Blessing Muzarabani and Brad Evans for their efforts in the heat and humidity.

“There’s not many plusses in batting, but these fast bowlers in this heat certainly bowled their heart out. [Ernest] Masuku had a great attitude. I am really happy for him,” said Raza.

The captain’s comments reflected his appreciation for the bowling unit’s commitment despite the team’s overall defeat in the final.

Zimbabwe will now prepare for a longer stay in the UAE, with three T20 Internationals and two Tests against Afghanistan scheduled in Sharjah. Raza expressed hope that the extended period in the region will help his team acclimatise to the conditions.

“One thing I’m expecting is us guys to be now [be] acclimatised. I think we arrived two days before the first game, and I know we won against Bangladesh, but we suffered [in the heat],” Raza said.

Raza noted that the team’s time in the country by the final of the tri-series had been approximately one week, with the T20 series beginning four days later on October 27, 2026. He suggested that the additional ten days in the UAE before the first Test would provide Zimbabwe with better preparation for the conditions.

“We are still struggling with heat and humidity and all that. But now that we’ve been in the country for almost a week and the T20 starts in four days’ time, that will give us ten days [in the UAE] before the first game,” Raza added.
