Arguably the greatest footballer of his generation, Lionel Messi has never needed an external push to chase a target, and Inter Miami head coach Cristian “Kily” González is convinced the same hunger will carry the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner to 1,000 career goals.
González was speaking after Messi’s second-half brace helped Inter Miami to a 3-1 win away at Atlanta United on Saturday, a result that keeps the defending MLS champions second in the Eastern Conference with 55 points from 30 games. Messi struck twice in four minutes, in the 56th and 60th, after Germán Berterame had headed the opener on the stroke of half-time, with Fafa Picault pulling one back from the penalty spot in the 89th minute.
