The West Indies are currently touring India with the T20I series level at 2-2 following Shai Hope’s century in the fourth match in Hyderabad. However, the financial implications of this tour have sparked serious concerns about the sustainability of Caribbean cricket. Despite the series taking place on Indian soil, the West Indies board stands to gain nothing from the broadcasting revenue generated.

Cricket West Indies CEO Dirk Dehring has raised alarm about the structural inequity in the modern bilateral cricket revenue model. Speaking on The Scoop, Dehring explained how a decision made decades ago has created a financial crisis for West Indies cricket. The current arrangement means that while India’s massive population and broadcasting market generate substantial income from the series, the visiting West Indies receive no share of those revenues.

“West Indies cricket receives nothing in this case, because the series is being played in India. A series that could generate $20 million to $30 million in India brings West Indies cricket no revenue,” said Dehring as quoted by Wisden.

“To understand how this happened, you have to go back to 1997. I was fortunate, or unfortunate, to be around when the ICC member countries voted to change the financial model that underpinned world cricket. Until then, West Indies was a very attractive team, and everybody wanted us to tour. We would receive a touring fee, which was often worth more than we could earn by hosting a series in the Caribbean,” he added.

The widening gap between hosting and touring nations

The new model gave hosting nations complete control over broadcasting revenues generated within their borders. This arrangement created a stark disparity between nations with large populations and broadcasting markets and those with smaller domestic audiences.

“That meant India could retain the revenues generated by a population of one and a half billion people, while West Indies could retain whatever revenues we could generate in Antigua, with its population of around 100,000, or St Kitts, with around 30,000,” Dehring said.

Dehring expressed his strong opposition to the 1997 decision and its long-term consequences for Caribbean cricket. The voting outcome left West Indies isolated in a decision that would reshape the financial landscape of international cricket.

“It was palpably unfair. We were outvoted nine to one by the ICC member countries. At the time, I said that this decision had effectively signed the demise of West Indies cricket because it took away our main source of income,” Dehring said.

The financial pressure on West Indies cricket has become acute. The board faces a shortfall of between US$20 million and US$25 million annually to deliver its full range of competitions and development programmes. This funding gap has forced difficult decisions, including a 25 per cent cut in retainer fees for international players’ contracts. Players were expected to accept or decline these reductions following the conclusion of the India tour.
