[WATCH] Tilak Varma run out after bizarre mix-up with Axar Patel

India vice-captain Tilak Varma was run out for 28 off 16 balls following a bizarre mix-up with Axar Patel during the 3rd T20I against West Indies at Holkar Stadium in Indore on Sunday, October 11, 2026. The dismissal arrived in the 17th over, bowled by Gudakesh Motie, and prompted a stern reaction from India head coach Gautam Gambhir in the dugout.

Varma had looked in fine touch, striking four boundaries across his 16-ball stay at the crease. The incident began when Axar Patel flicked a low full toss from Motie towards the leg side, with West Indies fielder Kamil Pooran moving to cut off the ball near the boundary. Both batters appeared to read the situation as a boundary and momentarily stopped tracking the ball and their running. Axar sensed the danger quickly and scrambled back safely to his crease, but Varma was caught well short of his ground and was dismissed.

The run-out sparked immediate discussion on social media, with fans highlighting the costly nature of the communication failure at a stage when India were looking to accelerate their scoring in the closing overs.

How did Varma’s dismissal affect India’s total?

India had reached 117 for 3 at one stage in their innings, but a collapse followed and they were eventually bowled out for 223 in 20 overs, setting West Indies a target of 224 to win the match. Varma’s exit in the 17th over removed a well-set batter at precisely the moment India needed someone to push the scoring rate higher in the death overs.

Abhishek Sharma had given India a strong start, contributing 69 off 30 deliveries to lay a solid platform at the top of the order. Despite that foundation, wickets fell in a cluster towards the end of the innings, and the run-out of Varma added to the pressure on the lower order to compensate. Gambhir’s visible displeasure from the dugout reflected how significant such a lapse can be when a team is attempting to post a match-winning total in the final overs of a T20I.

What has Tilak Varma’s recent T20I form looked like?

Varma had carried strong momentum into the 3rd T20I. In the previous match of the same series, he had finished unbeaten on 44 off 18 balls, underlining his capacity to score quickly in the death overs and his value as a finisher for India. His knock of 28 off 16 balls in Indore, though cut short by the running mix-up, again demonstrated his attacking intent, with four boundaries before the incident ended his innings prematurely.
