IND vs WI 2026: India vs West Indies Highlights & Review – 1st ODI

India made light work of the target of 296 set by the West Indies in the first ODI at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday, September 27.

Shubman Gill won the toss and opted to field first on what seemed like a belter of a track. Justin Greaves and John Campbell stitched a 135-run stand for the first wicket before Kuldeep Yadav gave India the initial breakthrough in the 20th over.

Campbell was dismissed for 64 but Greaves continued his innings despite struggling with a leg injury. Kuldeep spun a web around the West Indies middle-order, as Shai Hope and Jewel Andrew fell victim to the wrist spinner. Greaves went on to score his maiden ODI century before becoming Kuldeep’s fourth wicket of the day.

The West Indies lost the plot through the middle overs and it was Amir Jangoo’s unbeaten 58 off 43 balls that helped them get to a fighting total of 295/7.

Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma played some delightful shots before the latter was dismissed for 32 by Alzarri Joseph. However, the Indian openers had already added 74 runs in 12 overs by that point.

Virat Kohli joined forces with Gill and the duo forged a 151-run stand off just 132 deliveries. Gill notched up a century before getting dismissed for 110 off 108 balls in the 34th over.

However, there was no stopping Kohli. The former India skipper reached 15,000 runs in ODI cricket during his knock. He brought up his 55th century in the format off just 74 balls. Kohli eventually finished the game with back-to-back sixes and remained unbeaten on 139 off 88 balls. Ruturaj Gaikwad gave him company with a 19-ball 13*. India romped home in just 41.4 overs with eight wickets in the bank.

Top batting performance – Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli was the top performer with the bat despite centuries from Greaves and Gill. The fluency with which Kohli batting was amazing to watch. He smashed 10 fours and nine sixes, finishing with a strike rate of 157.95. He looked in sublime touch and it won’t be a surprise if he gets at least one more ton in the two remaining games.

Best bowling spell – Kuldeep Yadav

Kuldeep Yadav turned the game on its head with a phenomenal spell. He is the only specialist spinner in the squad for this tour and fans and experts were hoping that he would step up against the West Indies batters, who have traditionally struggled against wrist spinners, especially in recent years. Kuldeep finished with figures of 4/40 in 10 overs.

• Virat Kohli reached 15,000 runs in ODI cricket, becoming only the second batter to get to the milestone.
• Kohli brought up his 10th ODI hundred against the West Indies. He also has 10 centuries against Sri Lanka. This is the most ODI 100s against a particular team.
• Kohli scored a record-extending 55th ODI ton. Sachin Tendulkar sits second with 49 tons.
• Kohli joined Sachin Tendulkar at the top of the list for most 100s in List A cricket (60).
• Kohli reached his century in 74 balls. This is his third-fastest ODI ton.
• Kohli hit nine sixes in an ODI innings for the first time.

Who won the Player of the Match?

Kuldeep Yadav won the Player of the Match for his exemplary bowling spell. When all the Indian bowlers struggled to break the opening partnership, Kuldeep not just dismissed the two overs but completely changed the momentum of the game.
