Essex County Cricket Club cricketer Robin Das, 24, has been charged with two counts of rape and suspended by the county with immediate effect. The charge was formally announced on July 23, 2026, the same day Essex confirmed his suspension.

The Metropolitan Police stated that Das, of Queens Road, Waltham Forest, was charged on July 23, 2026 with two counts of rape. The alleged incident took place in Brixton on March 30, 2024. Das was arrested on August 27, 2025, more than a year after the alleged incident, before the formal charge was brought nearly eleven months later.

“Robin Das of Queens Road, Waltham Forest, was charged on 23 July 2026 with two counts of rape,” the Metropolitan Police said, as quoted by Cricinfo.

Das played his last match for Essex just two days before the charge was announced, turning out in a One-Day Cup fixture against Middlesex on July 21, 2026. He made his Essex debut in 2020 and has accumulated nine first-class appearances for the county across his career.

What has Essex County Cricket Club said about the suspension?

Essex confirmed the suspension on July 23, 2026, and stated that the club had maintained contact with key cricket bodies throughout the period since Das was arrested.

“Essex County Cricket Club can confirm that a male member of the playing staff, currently under contract with the club, recently appeared in court in relation to an incident that took place outside club activities,” the club said in an official statement.

“Throughout, the club has remained in contact with the ECB, PCA, the Cricket Regulator and the player with regard to the matter, which included an immediate and ongoing suspension. The club will continue to follow all appropriate legal processes and guidance.

“As a club we have strict safeguarding and HR procedures in place, and all employees of Essex County Cricket Club are required to meet the highest standards of professional conduct at all times. As legal proceedings are in progress, the club are unable to make any further comment at this time,” the club concluded.

Essex confirmed it had been in communication with the England and Wales Cricket Board, the Professional Cricketers’ Association and the Cricket Regulator throughout the process.

What is the next confirmed step in the legal proceedings?

Das is scheduled to attend Inner London Crown Court on October 9, 2026. That hearing represents the next confirmed procedural step following the charge brought in July 2026.

The case timeline spans a considerable period. The alleged incident in Brixton occurred on March 30, 2024. Das was arrested on August 27, 2025, and the formal charge followed on July 23, 2026. No further procedural dates beyond the October 9 Crown Court appearance have been confirmed at this stage. Essex has stated it will follow all appropriate legal processes as the matter progresses through the courts.
