England’s recent Test win over Pakistan has provided some momentum ahead of a new era under incoming head coach Stephen Fleming. The former New Zealand captain, however, has already set his sights on a bigger objective: helping England reclaim the No. 1 spot in the Test rankings and making the World Test Championship a key part of the team’s ambitions.
Fleming spoke to the media for the first time since being appointed England’s Test coach and described the opportunity as one of the most prestigious roles in cricket. He has signed a contract with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) until September 2030 after a two-week recruitment process.
“I would love to be in charge of the No. 1 Test team in the world. That would be my aspiration,” Fleming quoted as saying by TOI, as he outlined his ambition of taking England back to the top of the rankings for the first time since 2012.
Fleming’s first assignment will be England’s upcoming winter series against South Africa, before the team turns its attention to a home Ashes campaign. The former New Zealand captain admitted that the Ashes is an occasion he has admired for a long time, particularly during his playing days.
Fleming keen to build England’s identity
Fleming has already started working with Test captain Joe Root as he looks to establish a clear identity for the side. The new head coach stressed the importance of creating a strong sense of belonging within the squad while allowing the players to have a say in how England play their cricket.
“The way players represent England and the group is going to be really important to me,” he said, adding that the team’s style would ultimately be shaped by the players themselves.
The World Test Championship is another major target for Fleming. England have failed to reach the final in the first three editions of the competition, but the new coach believes there is scope for significant improvement.
“England could do much better than that,” he said, describing the WTC as an aspirational target alongside other major events.
Fleming also identified areas such as improving England’s over-rate as part of the process of developing a stronger team identity.

Fleming takes over from Brendon McCullum, who had been at the helm of England’s Test side since 2022. The team’s struggles over the past 18 months contributed to the backdrop of the coaching change, although Fleming believes there is enough potential within the group to move forward.
Fleming said McCullum had been honest about England’s situation and recognised that the team still had an opportunity to turn things around.
“That was one thing that will probably hurt him (McCullum) a little bit (underperformance) – I think he feels what I feel now, that there’s an opportunity around the corner. He was also realistic about what had gone on and just very honest. It’s interesting when you go to watch as a bystander for the first half of the year, then things change quite quickly to a real narrow focus on where the team was at,” he concluded.
