Since 2021, Oneil Cruz has been an important player for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Shortly before he made his MLB debut, however, he was allegedly involved in a shocking incident in his native Dominican Republic.
A report published by nonprofit investigative journalism organization ProPublica revealed that Cruz worked with a “fixer” to reach settlements with the families of those involved in a car crash that claimed three lives.
The crash occurred in Bani, Dominican Republic, on Sept. 21, 2020, when Cruz’s SUV rear-ended a motorcycle. The riders were: Daniela Pérez García, Deby Beato Charles and Yohan Saba Mercado. All three were killed, local authorities stated in a press release.
