Stephen Fleming, the long-standing head coach of the Chennai Super Kings, has parted ways with the franchise and will no longer continue to be a part of their set-up. Fleming had joined CSK as a player in the inaugural Indian Premier League season in 2008 and transitioned to a coaching job the next season, a relationship that continued ever since.

CSK made the announcement official via a media release on Monday, July 13, stating that the two were engaged in a round of honest conversations regarding the future of the five-time champions in the IPL ahead of the 2027 season. CSK has not named a replacement for Fleming yet, and an announcement is expected to be made shortly.

“Eighteen years is a lifetime in sport, and I leave with nothing but gratitude. My time with Chennai Super Kings has been the privilege of my coaching career. I am proud of everything we have achieved. Together, we celebrated unforgettable victories, overcame difficult moments, and built memories that will stay with me forever.

“CSK will always be close to my heart, and I will be cheering the team on for years to come,” Fleming said in a franchise statement.

What is Stephen Fleming’s record as CSK head coach?

Fleming’s stint with the Chennai-based franchise as the head coach took off in 2009, and it did not take him long to find success. He led the side to their first title win in 2010, under MS Dhoni‘s captaincy, obviously, and repeated it in 2011, making them the first team to win consecutive titles in the cash-rich tournament. He was also at the helm when CSK won the Champions League T20 titles in 2010 and 2014.

For the next few years, the Super Kings’ cabinet remained as it is, but their comeback to the marquee league in 2018 saw them lift their third trophy, making a thunderous return. There was nothing for the next two years, but 2021 saw them beat Kolkata Knight Riders in the final to win their fourth and become the joint-most successful IPL team alongside Mumbai Indians when they lifted it for the fifth time in 2023.

However, since Dhoni relinquished the full-time captaincy, Fleming and CSK have looked a bit off colour under Ruturaj Gaikwad. Many cricket experts have also said that Fleming probably needs to change his approach or CSK will change him. Eventually, the franchise has moved on from him, and the future remains in ambiguity for both. It will be interesting to see where the two head from here.

“From the earliest days of this journey, Fleming helped define not just how we played, but what we wanted to be as a franchise. He built a culture rooted in consistency, humility, and putting the team first. His ability to understand people and bring out the best from individuals across the team has been one of his greatest strengths.

“His influence extends far beyond the boundary, and we are proud to have shared this remarkable journey together,” the Super Kings chief executive officer, Kasi Viswanathan said.
