We want to make Ghana proud – Brandon Thomas-Asante on World Cup dream

Black Stars forward Brandon Thomas-Asante says representing Ghana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup is “the biggest privilege” of his career, as Carlos Queiroz’s side intensifies preparations in Wales ahead of Tuesday’s friendly and next month’s FIFA World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the United States of America. Ghana will kick off their campaign against Panama in Toronto on June 17 before facing England and Croatia.

Here is what he had to say:

On training so far

Today was another important session, it’s tiring after the season and we’re getting our bodies prepared for another push. But every day we’re more and more prepared and I’m happy to be here and we want to prepare in the right way to go and be successful. So, we feel good.

On representing Ghana at the World Cup

It’s always the biggest privilege, you know. It’s something that since I was young, when I was going to the games, to pray and to believe and to dream of achieving it one day and now to be here is incredible. I know that there’s a lot of people, you know, in Ghana and all around the world that are really wishing us well. So, we want to go and do them proud, and I understand how much it means and it means so much to me personally.

On being successful at the World Cup

So, I want to do everything to give us the best chance to progress in the tournament. We don’t just want to go there and turn up for no reason. We want to be successful. So, we’re preparing for that. Yeah, he’s a very good guy, you know. All of us, we’re listening to how he wants us to play and understanding his ideas. So it’s been a blessing.

On working with Carlos Queiroz

I think as a player in your career, you always have to listen to every coach and take the things you can learn. So, this is another opportunity and he has incredible experiences in some huge clubs and some really good nations. So, I know that there’s a lot to learn.

On how he took the call up

Oh, it was amazing. It was a relief. You know, from the start of the season before I kicked the ball, I wrote down on a piece of paper that I wanted to be here. And of course, you know, to be able to work in that direction and to be here now is an incredible privilege. I think it took a while to sink in because, you know, to play in the World Cup or to be able to prepare for the World Cup is something. Like I say, from a child, it’s what I’ve been praying for. So, when it’s come now, it takes a while to really realise that, you know, to be in this camp is incredible. And I just want to take the opportunity to say that we’re proud to be here.

On message to Ghanaians

We’re happy to work for you guys and we want to make you proud. Honestly, we hear the support and we appreciate it. We understand how big of an opportunity it is and what it means. And we’re going to do everything to put the country back where we should be on the football map.
