The Black Stars face Mexico on Friday in Puebla in a key pre-World Cup friendly, as both nations ramp up preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. For Ghana, the match is the first of three Group L warm-up games before their World Cup opener against Panama on June 17. Mexico, also a co-host, will begin their tournament against South Africa.
Ghana will be without several key players – Jordan Ayew, Alexander Djiku, Thomas Partey, Kwasi Sibo, Abdul Fatawu Issahaku and Kamaldeen Sulemana are all unavailable for the Puebla clash.
Their absence opens the door for new faces to stake a claim just days before Ghana’s final World Cup squad is announced. The 22-man squad in camp includes in-form youngsters like Ibrahim Osman, Felix Afena-Gyan, Jesurun Rak-Sakyi and Majeed Ashimeru.
Despite the absentees, assistant coach Desmond Ofei — says the group remains confident.
“We’re optimistic going into the match. It’s a chance for the boys to show character and prove they belong on this stage,” he said.
Mexico, playing at home, will look to use the crowd in Puebla to their advantage. El Tri are known for their high press and technical midfield, and will test Ghana’s defensive organisation.
For the Black Stars, commitment and mentality will be key — a message new coach Carlos Queiroz has drilled into the squad all week. With Panama, England and Croatia waiting in Group L, this is Ghana’s first real measure against World Cup-calibre opposition.
The game also offers Carlos Queiroz and his technical staff a final look at players like Terry Yegbe, Nathaniel Adjei, Razak Simpson, Solomon Agbasi, Ebenezer Abban and Jerry Afriyie before naming the final squad for the World Cup.
With Partey absent, Ghana’s midfield of Ashimeru, Salim Adams and Emmanuel Agyei will need to be disciplined against Mexico’s quick passing game. Winning second balls and transitions could decide the game.
The match is scheduled for 8pm kick off (Local Time) and 2am GMT.
