A dominating display during both facets of the match saw Gujarat Titans (GT) absolutely thwart an already depleted Chennai Super Kings (CSK) lineup at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, in Match 66 of the IPL 2026 on Thursday, May 21. GT’s top-order batted for almost the entire innings, as skipper Shubman Gill (64 off 37), Sai Sudharsan (84 off 53) and Jos Buttler (57* off 27) helped the side post 229-4.
In reply, CSK could manage only 140 in 13.4 overs, as the host bowlers ran through their attack with an exceptional bowling spell by Player of the Match Mohammed Siraj (3-0-26-3). Notably, Siraj struck on the first ball of the run chase, getting the big fish of Sanju Samson for a golden duck. Ruturaj Gaikwad fell in Siraj’s next over, chopping one onto the stumps. Adding injury to assault, he also got Urvil Patel in the same over for a two-ball duck.Â
Kagiso Rabada also got important scalps in the form of Matthew Short in the powerplay. Rabada returned for his second spell towards the end of the innings and dismissed Noor Ahmad and Spencer Johnson in successive deliveries to complete his hat-trick, which went rather unnoticed. In addition to Rabada’s three-for, Rashid Khan also picked three during the middle overs to dismantle things completely for CSK.
What stood out for GT in this game was their composure to play an aggressive brand of cricket while taking calculative risks and attacking options while batting. With the ball, they first applied early pressure with crucial breakthroughs and then capitalised on the momentum despite the pitch offering a lot of help to the batters in the second innings, as, despite the collapse, CSK were flowing at the required rate.
Now, the Shubman Gill-led side has ensured a top-two spot before moving into the playoffs. They are currently awaiting their opposition in the Qualifier 1 of the tournament, which will be played at the HPCA Stadium, Dharamshala, on May 26.Â
