IPL 2026: Gujarat Titans vs Chennai Super Kings, Match 66 - Who Said What?
SHARE

Chennai Super Kings suffered a crushing 69-run defeat against Gujarat Titans in Match No. 66 of the Indian Premier League 2026 at Narendra Modi Stadium on May 21.

Batting first, Gujarat Titans posted a commanding total of 229/4 in 20 overs, courtesy of brilliant half-centuries from Sai Sudharsan, Shubman Gill, and Jos Buttler. Their aggressive batting display powered GT comfortably past the 200-run mark. For CSK, Gurjapneet Singh emerged as the most economical bowler, while the remaining wickets were shared among three bowlers with one scalp each.

In reply, Chennai Super Kings endured a batting collapse and were bundled out for 140 in just 13.4 overs. Shivam Dube fought a lone battle with a top score of 47, but lacked support from the other end as wickets continued to tumble at regular intervals. Gujarat’s bowling attack dominated proceedings, with Mohammed Siraj, Kagiso Rabada, and Rashid Khan claiming three wickets each.

With the emphatic victory, Gujarat Titans finished second on the points table after registering nine wins in 14 matches. Meanwhile, Chennai Super Kings bowed out of the tournament after suffering their eighth defeat of the season.

Talking Points:

GT top-order batters continue their dominance

Gujarat Titans once again displayed the strength of their top-order batting as Sai Sudharsan, Shubman Gill, and Jos Buttler dismantled the Chennai Super Kings bowling attack. Sudharsan and Gill forged a brilliant century opening partnership to provide the perfect platform for GT. After Gill’s dismissal, Sudharsan continued his aggressive approach alongside Buttler as the duo stitched together an 82-run stand in just 36 deliveries for the third wicket.

GT bowlers dominate the chase

GT’s bowling attack ensured that CSK never found momentum during the chase. Mohammed Siraj made an immediate impact in the powerplay with crucial wickets, putting Chennai under pressure early in the innings. Rashid Khan then controlled the middle overs brilliantly, dismissing three key batters and preventing any comeback. Kagiso Rabada sealed the contest with a clinical three-wicket haul as GT bundled out CSK for 140 in just 13.4 overs.

CSK officially eliminated from IPL 2026

With the heavy defeat, Chennai Super Kings were officially knocked out of the IPL 2026 playoff race after suffering their eighth loss of the season. The five-time champions endured another disappointing campaign and will now miss out on the playoffs for the third consecutive year, a rare slump for one of the league’s most successful franchises.

Who said what?

Ruturaj Gaikwad, Chennai Super Kings (Losing Captain)

We wanted to chase whatever the total is asap. When you’re chasing 230, it’s not easy against that bowling attack. Thought why don’t we give it a shot and express ourselves, credit to them. Wicket was spongy to start, they started well. Our bowling wasn’t good in the powerplay. Hard to stop their openers. We had our chance to restrict them under 200, failed to do it. Tough season, after a hat-trick of losses first up. We found momentum, we found the right spots and combinations, but then were hit by injuries. Ghosh and Overton going out unsettled us, we were a batter or bowler short in the last three games. Not many people buy the fact that we are a young team in transition , with a lot of inexperienced players. More than 8-10 players have played less than 20 games, they’ve gotten exposure, we’ve found out what areas we’re lacking. We still got six away wins, proud of the unit. We missed out on chasing 80 in 10 in Hyderabad and couldn’t restrict them in Chennai. Not able to do that. Still proud. Moving on from Rahane, Rayudu, etc the experience we had is tough… Karthik, Urvil and Brevis, who missed out initially, are there. Karthik has potential, has areas to improve. Urvil’s playing a full season for the first time, that comes with expectations. [Dhoni] You and I’ll get to know it next year. It’s a hard miss for us. He can come in those late overs and change the game just by staying in the crease. Never know about next season but really happy with the guys we have.

Shubman Gill, Gujarat Titans (Winning Captain)

Important win. Happy to go in with the momentum we have. Even the first two games we played were close. We knew we were competitive, needed 5% which we got in the Delhi game. Our bowlers hit lengths consistently, odd ball will go over the rope but it’s about backing your lengths. Happy with my batting, every time you’re out you think you could’ve done better. Catching was much better, hope we continue. [Dube shush celebration] When you’re playing a high-emotion game, it comes out. Neck’s okay. Have to keep up with the good things. Need to maintain intent and impact in the playoffs. After 12 games, we were No. 1 last season, same this time. We lost last two last season. There was some deja vu but I don’t think we’ve done much different this season. We’ve been consistently No. 1 or 2. Very grateful for fans who turn up and support us. Sides like RCB and CSK will have an edge, nothing will change in that matter.

Mohammed Siraj, Player of the Match

The ball is coming out nicely. I was sitting out for most games in the World Cup, I was working hard in the nets. I wasn’t bowling well in the first few games but have got my rhythm back. I work on everything from my rhythm, yorkers and bowling at different phases. On a red soil pitch I would always try to get Sanju driving. I don’t try much and keep things simple, even if I can keep the pressure then Rabada can pick the wickets.
