Mustafizur Rahman has secured his maiden Big Bash League contract with Melbourne Renegades for the upcoming KFC BBL|16 season. The 31-year-old Bangladesh pace bowler, affectionately known as ‘The Fizz’, brings substantial international experience to the franchise after 271 matches across all formats for the Tigers. With the Renegades now occupying 16 of their 18 available roster spots, the experienced quick will strengthen their bowling attack as they prepare for the summer campaign.

The signing addresses Melbourne’s pace depth following Jason Behrendorff’s shoulder surgery, which will sideline the fourth-highest wicket-taker in BBL history for KFC BBL|16. Mustafizur joins England wicketkeeper-batter Jonny Bairstow and New Zealand spinner Michael Bracewell as the franchise’s international recruits. His arrival represents a significant milestone for Bangladesh cricket in the BBL, as he becomes only the third player from the nation to feature in the competition, following Rishad Hossain, currently contracted to Hobart Hurricanes, and Shakib Al Hasan, who previously represented the same Melbourne franchise.

“I am looking forward to playing in the BBL for the first time with the Melbourne Renegades. It will be special to play at the MCG and I’m excited to join my teammates and contribute to the team,” Rahman, the left-arm seamer, said, as quoted by Cricket Australia.

Renegades Head Coach Luke Ronchi said Mustafizur’s experience and wicket-taking ability would be a valuable addition to the squad.

“His ability to take wickets in both the Powerplay and at the death is exactly what we wanted in our attack. “BBL audiences love a player who can change a game in a single over and Mustafizur can do just that. Every ball has the potential to produce something special, and our fans are going to love watching him bring the theatre across the summer,” Ronchi said.

Mustafizur’s T20 credentials and domestic experience

Mustafizur’s T20 credentials span 331 games across multiple leagues, where he has claimed 423 wickets at a strike rate of 16.9. In the Bangladesh Premier League, he has collected 121 wickets across nine campaigns. His IPL career began in 2016 when he won the title in his debut season with Sunrisers Hyderabad, and he has since appeared in eight editions of the Indian Premier League. On the international stage, he first encountered Australia during their two-Test home series in 2017, and later featured in five T20 World Cup group games in 2022.

Recent form and availability for the Renegades

In June, Mustafizur demonstrated his match-winning ability in high-pressure situations when he took three wickets for 27 runs in Mirpur to help Bangladesh secure an unassailable 2-0 lead in their three-match ODI series against Australia. This clinical performance showcased his capacity to deliver decisive moments when it matters most, a quality the Renegades will hope to harness during the summer.

Mustafizur will miss the Renegades’ season opener in Chennai against Perth Scorchers due to his ILT20 commitments with Dubai Capitals. He is expected to become available for selection once those obligations conclude, allowing him to contribute to the remainder of the tournament. The Melbourne franchise has assembled a squad that includes Michael Archer, Jonny Bairstow, Jason Behrendorff, Michael Bracewell, Josh Brown, Harry Dixon, Brendan Doggett, Sam Elliott, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Caleb Jewell, Ben Manenti, Ollie Peake, Mustafizur Rahman, Tom Rogers, Callum Stow and Will Sutherland.
