Ireland women‘s cricketer Rebecca Stokell has entered a voluntary suspension after an in-competition sample she provided on June 23, 2026 returned an adverse analytical finding for a Specified Substance. The suspension took effect on October 23, 2026 and will remain in place pending the outcome of the ICC disciplinary process.

Stokell, who is 26 years old and has accumulated 109 caps for Ireland, acknowledged that the breach related to prescription medication and the reporting requirements that govern its use under the ICC Anti-Doping Code. Both she and the ICC have confirmed that the substance involved is not performance-enhancing and that the breach was unintentional.

“I fully accept my mistake and have voluntarily entered into a period of suspension ahead of the findings being returned. While this was not performance related in any way, I understand that I am responsible for following the Anti-Doping Guidelines and I hope that I can be back playing for Ireland as soon as possible,” Stokell said in a statement.

Her last appearance for Ireland came during an ODI series against England in early September 2026, before the adverse finding was processed and the voluntary suspension was arranged.

“While we feel very sorry for Rebecca and have provided the level of support appropriate in these circumstances, this incident does serve as a reminder to all our international players that the Anti-Doping Rules are in place to protect both the sport and the athletes themselves,” Cricket Ireland’s Director of High Performance, Graeme West, addressed the situation.

What did Stokell breach and why does it matter?

The ICC Anti-Doping Code places a strict obligation on players to report any prescription medication they are using, particularly when competing. Stokell’s adverse finding arose from her failure to adhere to those reporting guidelines in relation to a prescription substance, rather than from any attempt to gain a competitive advantage.

The ICC classifies the substance as a Specified Substance, a category that typically carries a different set of procedural considerations compared to prohibited performance-enhancing drugs. The confirmation that the substance was not performance-related is relevant to how the disciplinary panel may assess the case, though the formal outcome remains pending.

This case is not without recent precedent in women’s cricket. Australia pacer Megan Schutt received a two-match suspension in October 2026 after a comparable situation involving a prescription medication and the competition guidelines governing its use. The Schutt case underlined that even inadvertent administrative failures around medication reporting carry formal consequences under the code.

What is the next step for Stokell and Ireland cricket?

The ICC disciplinary process will now determine the length and terms of any formal sanction. Stokell’s decision to enter a voluntary suspension ahead of that outcome reflects her acceptance of responsibility and is consistent with the cooperative approach the code encourages from players.
