Sharad Pawar, the 85-year-old former International Cricket Council President and ex-Board of Control for Cricket in India chief, was admitted to Ruby Hall Clinic in Pune on Monday, November 2, after he complained of chest pain. Medical examinations were initiated shortly after his arrival at the facility, and the hospital confirmed that all his health parameters remained stable at the time of reporting.

Member of Parliament Supriya Sule, who is Pawar’s daughter, confirmed the hospitalisation in a statement shared.

“Baba has been admitted to Ruby Hall Clinic, Pune, following a bout of cough. He is undergoing medical tests, and all his health parameters are stable. Thank you all for your concern and good wishes,” Supriya shared via her official X account, sharing a critical health update for her father and the ex-cricket administrator.

What is Sharad Pawar’s standing in Indian and international cricket?

Pawar’s contributions to cricket administration span both the domestic and global stages, making him one of the most consequential figures the sport has produced in India. He served as BCCI President from 2005 to 2008, a period during which Indian cricket underwent significant administrative development, and his influence extended well beyond the national board to the highest levels of world cricket governance.

Beyond, he has also served as the administrator at the Mumbai Cricket Association, which is one of the most successful state associations in domestic cricket. His grandnewphew, Rohit Pawar, is the president of the Pune-based Maharashtra Cricket Association currently.

He served as ICC President across two separate tenures — from November 18, 1991 to March 6, 1993, and again from 2010 to 2012. These stints placed him among a very small group of Indian administrators to have led the global body, and they cemented his reputation as a statesman of the game. His ability to navigate both domestic politics within the BCCI and the complex diplomacy of international cricket governance set him apart from most administrators of his generation.

Away from cricket, Pawar is also the chief of the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar), underscoring the remarkable breadth of his public life across sport and politics over several decades.
