India secured a 3-2 series victory against New Zealand in the T20I series, with the team winning the opening three matches before the hosts claimed the final two encounters at Hamilton on November 1, 2026. The series demonstrated India’s aggressive cricket despite the squad arriving in the country with minimal preparation time.

After competing in the Asian Games in Japan from September 24 to October 3, 2026, where India won gold, the team played a five-match T20I series against West Indies from October 6 to October 17, 2026. India then touched down in New Zealand on October 20, 2026, practised for just one day on October 21, and began their first T20I on October 22. Head coach Gautam Gambhir reflected on the team’s performance after the series concluded, emphasising the challenges the squad faced upon arrival in unfamiliar conditions.

“Biggest achievement, apart from winning, is how they’ve handled the conditions and how ruthless they were in the first three games,” Gambhir was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.

How did India manage their preparation in New Zealand?

India’s opening T20I showcased their aggressive intent, with the team chasing 225 in the first match. Shreyas Iyer scored 28 off 42 balls while Naman Dhir contributed 42 off 15 deliveries. The second T20I presented a tougher challenge, with India reduced to 70 for 5 before Tilak Varma, Naman Dhir and Nitish Reddy guided the chase to victory. India completed the pursuit of 199 in 13.2 overs, demonstrating the ruthlessness Gambhir referenced.

“It’s an incredible effort because the boys got only one day to prepare. They arrived on the 20th, we practiced on the 21st, different conditions, different weather conditions, different dimensions, playing against a quality side like New Zealand in their own backyard with the amount of experience they had in T20 cricket, plus most of the boys touring New Zealand for the first time. So I think boys can be extremely, extremely proud of their efforts, especially when you hardly got any time to prepare,” Gambhir said.

“Three young boys got us across the line [in the second T20I] and then chasing 199 in 14 overs [13.2]… winning the first game after one practice session. That is what is called ruthlessness. We wanted to win the next two as well, but sometimes things don’t go in your favour as well. I feel that the biggest achievement is how they were able to handle pressure, how they were able to handle conditions and more importantly how ruthless they were in the first three games,” Gambhir said.

How has Shreyas Iyer handled the captaincy challenge?

Shreyas Iyer took over the India T20I captaincy after the team had won the World Cup and remained unbeaten in series play for two years. Gambhir acknowledged the challenge of building a new squad while maintaining that winning record, particularly with an inexperienced bowling attack. The head coach emphasised the importance of developing young players through exposure on the road, as the team prepares for the next World Cup cycle.

Gambhir’s message after India’s 3-2 T20I series win

“When he took over, he took over a very, very successful T20 team. The team that had won the World Cup, and more importantly, that hadn’t lost a series in two years. I don’t think any other team across the globe has done that, that they’ve not lost a single series for two years and gone on to win the World Cup. But this is a great opportunity as well, that if you start thinking of building for the next World Cup, you’ve got to give young players the opportunity and try and develop them being on the road as well. Because you see the amount of experience that we had during the World Cup, and after that, the kind of experience we had in a bowling lineup. It is always challenging,” Gambhir said.

Iyer’s captaincy tenure began with defeats to Ireland and England, followed by victories in Zimbabwe and Afghanistan, and a gold medal triumph at the Asian Games in Japan. The West Indies series ended in a 2-2 draw. Despite the early setbacks, Gambhir backed his captain to manage the transition effectively, particularly given the inexperience in the bowling department.

“So I thought that Shreyas has done a fabulous job, with so much of inexperience in the bowling lineup. Because as a captain, you’re only as good as how your bowlers or your batters perform. Especially with an inexperienced attack, I think he’s done a phenomenal job,” he concluded.
