On October 31, 2026, Kevin Pietersen used social media to put to rest speculation surrounding his role with England’s men’s white-ball side. While England were on assignment in Pakistan, Pietersen was photographed in Delhi at the India Championship golf tournament, and the contrast between his location and the team’s drew sharp attention across cricket circles.
Pietersen had been named England’s specialist white-ball mentor on September 7, 2026, under a contract with the Wales Cricket Board that extends through to the 2027 Men’s ODI World Cup. That tournament will be co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. The arrangement covers approximately 150 days of engagement with the white-ball squad across the build-up period, but it does not bind him to every tour the team undertakes.
“Just need to clear something up once and for all. I am a consultant to the England Cricket Team,” Pietersen wrote, responding to the online chatter.
Why was Pietersen not part of England’s Pakistan tour?
England’s failure to qualify for the Tri-Series final in Pakistan provided the immediate backdrop for Pietersen’s public statement. His absence from that tour, set against his visible presence at a golf event in the Indian capital, fuelled questions about his commitment to the role. The facts of his contract, however, confirm that attending every series was never a condition of his appointment.
Rather than serving as a permanent member of the coaching staff, Pietersen functions as a specialist consultant who joins the squad for selected assignments. He confirmed that Australia is among the tours he will attend, along with England’s visit to South Africa. At the 2027 ODI World Cup itself, he is scheduled to be present for all of England’s group-stage matches against Pakistan and New Zealand.
Pietersen’s first engagement in the role came during England’s series against Sri Lanka earlier in 2026. That appearance marked his re-entry into the national set-up approximately 12 years after his playing career at international level concluded in the 2013-14 Ashes series.
Who else is in England’s white-ball coaching group?
Pietersen works alongside a support staff assembled specifically for England’s white-ball programme. Brendon McCullum leads the group as white-ball head coach, and the wider unit includes Marcus Trescothick, Tim Southee, Jeetan Patel and Sarah Taylor.

Before taking up the England role, Pietersen had remained active in the white-ball game through franchise cricket. During the 2025 Indian Premier League season, he served as a mentor with Delhi Capitals, keeping him closely connected to the format at the highest level.
The depth of experience Pietersen brings to the consultant position is reflected in a career that spanned all three formats for England. Across 104 Test matches, he accumulated 8,181 runs, while his 136 ODIs and 37 T20 Internationals produced a combined total of more than 5,500 runs in white-ball cricket.
