Lancashire are looking into the possibility of staging a farewell event for pace bowler James Anderson after his release from the club triggered considerable anger among the county’s membership. The club confirmed last week that Anderson, who turns 45 next year, will not be part of their plans for the coming season.

The issue dominated a tense gathering at Old Trafford on Monday evening, attended by roughly 200 members. Several voiced frustration that the timing of the announcement, coming at the end of the season, had robbed supporters of any chance to properly thank Anderson for his service or mark his career in a meaningful way.

As reported by BBC Sport, Chief executive Richard Kenyon and director of cricket Paul Farbrace, who joined proceedings via video link from a holiday in the United States, represented the club. Farbrace is understood to have taken direct ownership of the decision while fielding questions from members. Both officials committed to exploring a solution that would give supporters a fitting occasion to recognise Anderson’s contribution to the Red Rose county.

What reasoning did Farbrace offer for the release?

Farbrace, who departed his post at Sussex before taking up his role at Lancashire, restated the position outlined in the club’s public statement on Sunday. His stated aim is to construct a squad capable of lifting the County Championship within four years, and he does not see Anderson, who turns 45 next year, as part of that rebuild.

Reaction inside the room was not uniform. One attendee told BBC Sport that the mood remained mixed, while other members indicated that Farbrace’s willingness to engage directly had gone some way towards easing tensions. Several counties have already registered interest in signing Anderson ahead of next season, so his playing career may yet continue elsewhere.

Anderson captained Lancashire in the County Championship last season. The county finished second bottom in Division Two, extending a difficult run of recent results, yet Anderson stood apart as one of their standout performers. He took 50 wickets across the campaign and was voted the club’s Championship player of the year. In his first public comment following Sunday’s announcement, Anderson conveyed sadness over the development but did not announce his retirement.

What is Anderson’s record with Lancashire and England?

Anderson’s connection with Lancashire stretches back to 2000, when he appeared in List A cricket as a 17-year-old for the Lancashire Cricket Board against Suffolk. His professional debut for the county followed a year later, and he had established himself in the England side by the close of 2002.

During his time at Old Trafford, Anderson gathered 443 first-class wickets for Lancashire, supplemented by 83 in List A cricket and a further 50 in T20s. When his England career was brought to an abrupt close in 2024, he chose to carry on with Lancashire in 2025, having expressed confidence at the time that he could sustain his cricket for three more years. His 911 international wickets stand as a record for England and for all pace bowlers in the history of the game.

Anderson, now 44, is England’s all-time leading wicket-taker across the Test and ODI formats and first represented Lancashire in 2001, a bond with the county that lasted more than two decades before last week’s release.
