Australia survived a dramatic batting collapse to beat New Zealand by 2 wickets with 7 balls remaining at North Sydney Oval on October 18, 2026, in the first T20I. Chasing New Zealand’s 162/2, Australia reached 102 without loss at the halfway mark before losing 6 wickets for just 57 runs, eventually finishing on 165/8.

Ellyse Perry top-scored with 52 from 30 balls and was central to Australia’s recovery after the collapse threatened to derail the chase. Jess Kerr was the pick of the New Zealand bowlers, taking 3-25 from 4 overs, while Flora Devonshire’s direct hit broke the Mooney-Perry partnership at a critical stage. Izzy Sharp also contributed with a catch in the field.

The reigning T20 World Cup champions, who won the 2026 edition, lead the three-match series 1-0. The second T20I is scheduled for October 20, 2026, and the third for October 22, 2026.

Why did Australia’s batting collapse happen?

Australia had won all three preceding ODIs against Bangladesh by large margins of 7, 9 and 8 wickets, but those matches gave only about five players meaningful time in the middle. That limited batting exposure appeared to contribute to the lack of sharpness at the back end of the chase against New Zealand.

Perry, speaking after the match, acknowledged the team was not fully clinical but pointed to the nature of T20 cricket and the limited match practice as the primary factors.

“There’s probably an element of not being clinical tonight. I guess that’s how it goes sometimes in T20 when you keep pushing the game forward. We went up to Brisbane and played three ODIs against Bangladesh and I think there were only about five girls who really had any significant time in the middle. So I think more than anything, it’s probably just a sharpening up of your options when you go out there straight away and just making good decisions within our framework and our style of play, to be clinical at the back end there,” Perry said, as quoted by Cricket.com.au.

Phoebe Litchfield was also sidelined by injury for the first T20I, which further limited Australia’s batting depth on the night.

How did New Zealand perform with the ball?

New Zealand’s bowling unit put Australia under genuine pressure during the middle overs despite ultimately falling short. Jess Kerr’s 3-25 from 4 overs was the standout individual effort, and the visitors showed variety and experience throughout their attack. Perry acknowledged the quality of the New Zealand bowling effort.

“I think New Zealand bowled pretty well tonight. They’ve got some great variety in their attack, they’ve got good experience as well,” she said.

Devonshire’s direct hit to break the Mooney-Perry partnership was a key moment that shifted momentum during the collapse, and Sharp’s catch further underlined New Zealand’s sharp fielding effort on the night.
