Salman Ali Agha rewrote a long-standing Pakistan ODI record on Sunday, October 18, when he struck 107 off 90 balls against Sri Lanka in the tri-series opener at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. The innings contained 10 fours and a six, lifting Pakistan to 305 in 49.5 overs and setting up a 37-run victory after Sri Lanka’s batting order crumbled in the final stages of their chase.

The century was Agha’s fourth in 54 ODI appearances for Pakistan. All four have arrived while he was positioned at No. 5 or lower in the batting order, and that consistency has now placed him ahead of every other Pakistan batter in terms of ODI hundreds from those positions. He moved clear of Mohammad Yousuf, with whom he had shared the previous national record, and his name now sits in the same elite bracket as global greats MS Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh, widely regarded among the finest lower-order ODI centurions the game has produced.

How does Agha’s record compare with Mohammad Yousuf’s?

Yousuf accumulated three ODI centuries while batting at No. 5 or lower across a career that ran from 1998 to 2009. He played 114 matches in those positions during that period and was regarded as one of the most technically sound middle-order batters Pakistan produced in the format.

Agha has now gone one better, reaching four centuries from the same batting slots. Three of those hundreds have come specifically at No. 5, and he has reached that mark in just 33 matches batting in that position. The rate at which he has converted opportunities into three-figure scores at No. 5 highlights a level of consistency that goes well beyond what the raw numbers might initially suggest. The former Pakistan T20I captain has demonstrated that his ability to anchor and accelerate from the middle order is a reliable and match-winning asset for the side in ODI cricket.

Salman Ali Agha reveals reason behind century celebration

What does this century mean for Pakistan’s tri-series campaign?

Agha’s 107 was the central contribution in Pakistan’s total of 305 in 49.5 overs in the tri-series opener at Rawalpindi. Sri Lanka were unable to sustain their chase and fell 37 runs short after a collapse in the latter stages of their innings, handing Pakistan a winning start to the tournament.

The tri-series provides Pakistan with a concentrated block of ODI cricket ahead of a busy international schedule, and Agha’s form at the middle order will be a key factor in how deep the team can bat across the remaining matches. His record of four centuries from No. 5 or lower in 54 ODIs reflects a batter who has consistently delivered in a demanding role, and Pakistan will be keen to carry the momentum from this opening result into the rest of the competition.
