Shafali Verma struck 55 off 25 balls to guide India to a nine-wicket victory over Zimbabwe in the second T20I at Raipur on October 18, 2026. The explosive innings, which included six fours and four sixes, earned Shafali the player of the match award as India chased down Zimbabwe’s total of 102 for 8 in just 8.5 overs. The win clinched the series for India, with skipper Smriti Mandhana remaining unbeaten on 47 to complete a dominant chase.

Shafali’s turnaround came just two days after a difficult outing in the first T20I, where she was dismissed for four runs. During the 2025 off-season at home, the India vice-captain focused on identifying areas for improvement, with consistency emerging as a key priority. She examined the approach of Australian batters to understand what they were doing differently and how she could apply those lessons to her own game.

“In 2025, when I was back at home, I was thinking about what I can improve. Consistency was one of those things and I analysed the Australian batters to see what they were doing to try and improve,” Shafali said during the post-match presentation.

Mandhana backed India’s aggressive approach to T20I cricket and praised her opening partner’s performance. The India captain was content to play a supporting role while Shafali took the attack to Zimbabwe’s bowlers, demonstrating the team’s clear batting philosophy.

“Shafali was just doing her thing and I was happy to take singles. And when my chances came, I took them. That’s the brand we want to play,” Mandhana said.

Mandhana also acknowledged the bowling performance that restricted Zimbabwe in the first innings. Deepti Sharma, Shree Charani and Niki Prasad took crucial wickets to keep Zimbabwe’s total manageable. The India captain noted that the bowlers were significantly sharper than in the opening match of the series.

“It was a good one today. The bowlers were really on the mark today, and they were much better than the first match. Of course, Deepti, Shree Charani and Niki Prasad came in and took those two wickets.” Mandhana said.

Zimbabwe captain Josephine Nkomo reflected on the gulf in performance between the two teams, describing India’s batting display as a masterclass. She acknowledged the learning opportunity presented by watching how the Indian batters approached their innings and executed their game plan with precision.

“I thought that was a batting masterclass by the Indian team. We just stood there and watched. There’s quite a bit to learn and the best way is to watch how they batted. If we can take a leaf out of their book, it’ll be really good for us,” Nkomo said.

Shafali and Mandhana’s opening partnership also marked a historic milestone in T20I cricket. The pair became the first-ever batting combination to accumulate over 1000 runs for any wicket in a calendar year during their 96-run stand, underlining India’s dominance in the shortest format during 2026.
