Mumbai Indians have parted ways with Mahela Jayawardene and are now searching for a new head coach. The Sri Lankan served the franchise across two separate stints, first from 2017 to 2022 and then from 2024 to 2026, guiding them to three of their five IPL titles in 2017, 2019 and 2020. MI officials met on a Friday evening and decided to end the association, with Jayawardene’s contract having been due to expire around that time.

Three prominent names that had been linked with the vacancy have since been ruled out. Rahul Dravid, who coached India to the T20 World Cup title in 2024 and to the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup, is not in contention. He has indicated he will not be available for at least another season. After stepping away from his role with Rajasthan Royals ahead of the 2026 season, Dravid received numerous approaches from IPL franchises but has declined each one.

A source told Cricbuzz that Dravid’s current focus was on the careers of his two sons, further adding that the 2024 T20 World Cup-winning coach may eventually be open to returning to the IPL, but that will not happen next season. Australian wicketkeeper-batter Adam Gilchrist and former England white-ball captain Eoin Morgan had also been mentioned in connection with the role, but neither is available. Both are understood to have communicated their unavailability to IPL management.

Who could fill the vacancy at Mumbai Indians?

With the three most-discussed names out of the picture, Mumbai Indians have no confirmed replacement as yet. The interview process is expected to begin soon, according to sources familiar with the situation.

Mike Hussey, who recently parted ways with Chennai Super Kings, has been reaching out to IPL franchises. It would not be surprising if he has made contact with the MI management as well. Hussey is understood to have turned down an offer to join the England setup under Stephen Fleming and may also be considering a role in Australia, though he is believed to remain open to another IPL appointment.

South Africa’s Adrian Birrell and Australia’s Aaron Finch are two other names on the radar of multiple IPL franchises, including MI. Birrell is among the most sought-after coaches in franchise cricket at present, having guided Sunrisers Eastern Cape to three titles and four finals across four SA20 seasons. He also led Sunrisers Leeds Women to the final of The Hundred earlier this year.

Birrell currently serves as head coach of Sharjah Warriorz in the ILT20 and is reportedly not keen on moving to an IPL franchise, though that position could change. Finch, the former Australia captain, is believed to have held preliminary talks with a few IPL teams, though there is no confirmed information on whether those discussions have included MI. A notable former India player is also said to be on the radar of several franchises, though no name has been confirmed.

What happens to the existing MI support staff?

The uncertainty around the head coach role has a direct bearing on the rest of the Mumbai Indians support staff. The franchise has decided to leave it to whoever is appointed as the new head coach to determine whether the current backroom team will continue.

The support staff in question includes bowling coaches Lasith Malinga and Paras Mhambrey, batting coach Kieron Pollard and fielding coach Carl Hopkinson. The contracts of these individuals have either already expired or are set to conclude within the next couple of months, meaning the incoming coach will effectively have a free hand in shaping the support structure for the next season.
