South Africa have confirmed a seven-member squad for the Hong Kong Sixes 2026, with Jorich van Schalkwyk named as captain. The 22nd edition of the tournament is scheduled from October 30 to November 1, 2026, with all matches taking place at Tin Kwong Road Recreation Ground in Hong Kong.
The draw has placed South Africa in Group D, where they will face Afghanistan and Oman in the preliminary stage. Twelve teams in total will compete across four groups, with Pakistan carrying the title of defending champions into the 2026 edition after winning the 2025 tournament.
Three members of the squad featured in the 2025 edition. Van Schalkwyk, Blake Simpson and Abdullah Bayoumy all return with Hong Kong Sixes experience, while Ayabulela Gqamane, Alindile Mhletywa, Steve Stolk and Heath Richards complete the travelling party. Wandile Gwavu, who holds the South Africa A coaching role, will be in charge of the side throughout the tournament.
How did South Africa’s returning players perform in the 2025 edition?
Van Schalkwyk was the most productive batter in the South Africa camp at the 2025 Hong Kong Sixes, accumulating 122 runs to finish as the team’s leading run-scorer across the tournament. That record made him the clear choice to lead the side once more in 2026.
Bayoumy was equally influential with the ball, claiming four wickets to finish as South Africa’s top wicket-taker in 2025. The pair bring a combination of batting depth and bowling experience that gives the squad a reliable core heading into the group stage. Simpson’s return alongside them means South Africa carry three players who already know the demands of the format and the conditions at Tin Kwong Road Recreation Ground.
What does South Africa’s group stage path look like in 2026?
South Africa’s Group D assignment means they will face Afghanistan and Oman at Tin Kwong Road Recreation Ground before any knockout involvement. Each of the four groups contains three teams, so every group match carries direct implications for progression to the later stages of the tournament.
Pakistan’s presence as defending champions adds context to the wider competitive picture, though South Africa’s immediate focus will be on navigating Group D. The performances of Van Schalkwyk and Bayoumy, given their 2025 contributions, will be central to how far the side advances in the 22nd edition. With four new faces joining the three returning players, the balance between experience and fresh energy will be a key factor for coach Wandile Gwavu to manage across the three-day event.
