Australia defeated South Africa by 214 runs in the first Test at Kingsmead Stadium in Durban, which concluded on October 13, 2026. The match marked the first clash between the teams since South Africa upset Australia in last year’s World Test Championship final at Lord’s in London. South Africa’s second innings proved decisive, with the home side unable to mount a sustained challenge against Australia’s bowling attack.

South Africa coach Matthew Nkosi Conrad reflected on the defeat and highlighted the mental demands of Test cricket at the highest level. He pointed to Aiden Markram’s second-innings performance as an example of the approach required to survive against world-class opposition. Markram batted for nearly six hours, falling just two minutes short of that mark, and faced 237 balls for 75 runs, representing the longest individual resistance in South Africa’s attempt to save the match.

“Aiden showed us in the second innings that there’s nothing fancy about Test cricket. It’s that singlebloodymindedness — ‘I’ve got to bat for a day-and-a-half, irrespective of what it looks like’. Some of our batters can take a leaf out of his book,” Conrad was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.

Markram’s resistance and South Africa’s collapse

Markram and Wiaan Mulder resumed at 102-4 overnight and extended their fifth-wicket partnership to 69 runs off 205 balls before Josh Hazlewood’s breakthrough. Mulder batted for more than two hours and made 29 runs. However, South Africa’s collapse came swiftly thereafter, with Markram, Temba Bavuma and David Bedingham dismissed in 9.3 overs for 15 runs on day three. The last six wickets fell for 129 runs, exposing the fragility of the middle and lower order.

Markram and Mulder were the only batters to face more than 100 balls in South Africa’s second innings. David Bedingham managed more than an hour at the crease but no other batter sustained a lengthy stay. Anrich Nortje was the sole player who did not fall to a poor shot, pushing forward to a straightening delivery and edging to first slip. Hazlewood finished with 6-49 and wrapped up the win before tea on day five.

Conrad acknowledged the mental dimension of the dismissals and the challenge of maintaining composure under pressure. He explained that many of South Africa’s dismissals fell into the mental category rather than technical or tactical failures. The coach noted that the situation of the game, the enormity of the occasion and the desperate desire to perform well were all contributing factors to the errors in judgment.

“There’s a singlemindedness that goes with Test batting, especially against a world-class attack like Australia’s. Where do you apportion blame? Do you apportion blame? We need to be better after this. Yes, we were pulling the last strands of hair out with some of the decision-making and the shot-making,” Conrad added.

“Dismissals sit in one of three places: technical, tactical or mental. A lot of our dismissals sat in the mental corner. Is that an easier fix than technical and tactical? Probably not. What forces you into that error? Is it the situation of the game, the enormity of the occasion, the desperate desperation to do well? All those sorts of things, I’m sure, are factors,” he added.

South Africa’s comparative lack of recent Test cricket was a notable backdrop to the defeat. The team’s most recent Test before this match took place almost 11 months earlier in Guwahati. More significantly, South Africa had not played a Test at home for more than 18 months before the Durban fixture. Australia, by contrast, had played six Tests during the period when South Africa had none, providing the visitors with more recent match experience.

Conrad addressed the question of whether South Africa’s limited Test schedule affected their tactical preparation and decision-making. He rejected the notion that the team operated from a position of fear regarding mistakes. Instead, he explained that South Africa’s approach was shaped by the necessity of selecting personnel and tactics based on what they believed was required for each contest.

“Maybe this is the one we needed to get out of the way. I don’t think we operate from the perspective of being afraid of getting things wrong. Often, because of the few matches we play, we base a lot on what we feel is required tactically and back that up with the necessary personnel. We need to look at how we can improve the side without being knee-jerk in our decision-making and panicky. We need to show composure. But the question is always will it make the boat go faster if we make changes or will it slow the boat down? We’re constantly looking at how we can make the boat go faster,” Conrad explained.
