Sandeep Patil, who chaired India’s selection committee between 2012 and 2016, has addressed the departures of several legendary cricketers during his tenure. The selection panel consisted of five members, with Patil serving as chairman during this period. In a recent appearance on Doordarshan’s The Great Indian Cricket Show, Patil discussed the circumstances that led to the exits of Sachin Tendulkar, Yuvraj Singh, Gautam Gambhir and Zaheer Khan from the national team.

Patil emphasised that the selection decisions were not made unilaterally but were the result of collective deliberation by the entire panel. The former chief selector outlined the principles that guided the committee’s choices during his tenure, stressing that institutional responsibility took precedence over personal considerations.

“First of all, I want to make it clear: I wasnt the only one making these decisions. There was a selection panel of five, and I was its chairman. Whatever decisions we made, we made with the future of Indian cricket in mind, Patil said. It feels very bad to bring this up today, but legends as great as Sachin Tendulkar, Gautam Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh, and Zaheer Khan had to leave the team or retire. They know the reasons. Our job as selectors was to put the interests of the country, the BCCI, and Indian cricket first,” Patil said on The Great Indian Cricket Show on Doordarshan.

Patil stressed the importance of maintaining professional boundaries when making selection decisions. He acknowledged that personal relationships with players could complicate the selection process, but insisted that the committee’s primary obligation was to Indian cricket rather than individual players. The former selector explained that friendship with cricketers could not influence team composition or retention decisions.

“You can be friends with players, but there has to be a line. You cant say, He is my friend, so I will pick him for the team. When you are given this responsibility, you have to take it seriously, he said. You are not thinking about your own cricket; you are thinking about Indias cricket and its future. You sometimes have to make decisions you are not happy with, but you make them for the good of the Indian team,” Patil said.

Patil’s remarks reflected the difficult position faced by selection committees when managing the transitions of veteran players. The former chief selector’s comments underscored the tension between personal regard for established cricketers and the institutional responsibility to build teams for the future. His explanation provided insight into the decision-making process that shaped Indian cricket during the mid-2010s.
